This place is a vivid and classical example of how corruption affects our town and country. When we first heard of this project and saw the prelimiray plans we ( a group of citizens) spoke with the then Mayor and the Governor of Izabal showing concern for the fact that this supposed "market" didn´t even have a treatment plant for the supposed hundreds of businesses that were to operate there including butchers etc. The whole building was to be placed on a swamp and all the drainages were to go directly onto a friends farm.. needeles to say all the garbage would also end up there. The mayor pushed for the project and was approved for a total of 11 Million Quetzales roougly 1.5 mILLIONS US $ . of course there were cost overruns.. so the total cost is unknown. Furthermore the whole project is downhill and is withing meters of the Cemetery so one wonders about the health scenario. The builidng is a block and tin construct that is unfit for a market and hence has been abandoned. It now operates as a garbage dump and selection facilty. If you want to know why we in Guatemala are fed up with corruption go see this place. Rumours have it that the sister of the wife of an expresident was the one promoting this ill fated project and the mayor and her scammed on top of the already overpriced project. In the meantime our market is still a mess and hundreds of families starve every year in the nearby villages.. go figure!
p.d. A few years later to add insult to injury the same mayor paid a fortune for a mechanic well in the front yard of this disaster supposedly to improve the water supply but of course being a few meters from the cemetery and the dump the water is unfit for human consumption or any thing else for that matter...
