All the locals I spoke to seem aware of the incident or two last year, or at least rumors of it, that has caused security concerns. They seem to have increased the vigilance im the area, which means a lot in such a close-knit community.

As a solo female traveler, I felt safe at all times, although the grand total of 5 hikers (including me) embarking to the top today wan’t much of a target. There were trail builders putting in new stairs and they accompanied me part of the way down, chatting, adding to the overall feeling that I was being watched out for.

Entrance was 100 quetzales, as others have said. Pure water, bathroom, and even lockers available at the office where you pay.

I walked to the trailhead from San Juan, which put me behind schedule and caused me to see only clouds. I reached the top around 12:30 pm, just as the fog was blowing in. I’m fit and altitude acclimated, and it took me the full 3 hours to climb up. Down was much faster, but that’s my strength.

Overall, the highlight was having conversations with the workers—the clerk at the desk, Francisco, the police officers, and the trail builders. Also, the tire swing!!!

Did the hike to the top solo without a guide on a Saturday. Felt very safe, police were camping at 2400m and no one said there were banditos. Met many other hikers on the way up and down. The trail was clear and of good quality, the hike itself is quite tough though.

Great hike and nice staff. He entrance fee is 100qz and you'll get detailed information about what to expect. I've asked about recent robberies and dangers but it seems that they mostly occur around holiday season when there are more visitors. I went on my own and it was totally fine.
It's a steep climb in pretty warm climate so bring enough water & make breaks.

Planned to hire guide at entrance but there were none. I hiked with the next person who arrived and we went slowly. 3.5 up, .5 at the top and 2.5 down. Started at 7:30. Saw 2 police a few times, usually together and not near the top. Also they both were at the entrance when we left that made me think they both take lunch break at the same time.

Two of us went from San Pedro. We took a tuk tuk to get to the summit (worth it unless you want to add 45 minutes of straight vert. We paid gtq100 to a really friendly and helpful owner and mentioned it was safe.

We didn’t hire a guide and halfway up there were police chilling who also confirmed that it was safe up the top. There were around 10 other hikers doing it on the same day.

Definitely recommend doing this hike! Don’t have fear about robberies - that’s stopped once the police have got involved.

A beautiful hike with wonderful guides. Remember you're at altitude so don't underestimate: it was strenuous for my wife and I and we are endurance athletes. Treat the guides well, they are fantastic

Tough day out but worth it! 3 hour climb up along a very clearly visible path and 2 hour climb down. There’s places to stop on the way up (including a tire-swing) where you can have a break if you feel like it :)

Great hike if you’re looking for a challenging day of exercise in the Atitlan area. Others said it takes 2 hours to get up and 1 hour to get down but this seems unrealistic. Was in decent shape with my group and it took closer to 3 hours to get up and 1.5 hours down. I’d allow yourself 5-6 hours for the hike and expect your legs to be completely exhausted by the end. Absolutely stunning view at the top and as you get closer to the summit the forest becomes more rich.

Tough hike, but we'll worth it. Go early before the clouds gather.

100 QTC entrance. 1200m up and then 1200m down. Around 2400m altitude, it gets very steap until the summit. A guide is not mandatory, we ain't got any security problems. Took us 2 1/2h up and 1 1/2h down.

This was a great hike. We took a tuktuk to the trailhead and then paid our 100Q entrance (yeah, it's quite a lot).

There was a weird half arsed attempt to give us a guide who sort of met us and walked us the first 500m and then left us...odd.

Anyway, we are relatively fit and climbed it in 2 hours 15 minutes. It took us 1 hour 30 on the way down. There's a beautiful view at the top and a few viewpoints on the way, but it's mainly forest walking.

Be prepared! It's all uphill and requires some effort. That being said it is truly a great experience. If you're going early be sure to pack a jumper.
