The Hanging Church

The hanging church was built during late of the fourth century A.D. The church was built over two towers from roman fortress (Babylon fortress), in the 98 A.D. It was built in basilica stylle, i.e.the ark design) the interiors has carved structures in ebony, ivory & cedar and the columns made of marble. Very beautiful inside. The whole complex can be covered in about an hour. Must visit place in Cairo.

Wonderful incredible and a must visit if you’re staying in old Cairo

This place is the place where the holy family as in "Jesus" if you believe stayed on their way to Bethlehem. They have the original stones incased in glass below, you can see the well the holy family drank from, the well where Mary washed his clothes.

It was gorgeous. Breathtaking. Everything was so beautiful and looked like it was out of a magazine. You do have to take your shoes off to walk inside the church part. Bring shoe covers. They charge $1 for 3 shoe covers.

Coptic Hanging Church is another representation of Cairo, Egypt. In actuality, 29 stairs were needed to get to the church. It was known as "the Staircase Church" by the first visitors to Cairo. The land surface actually rose by about 6 meters. Since the time of the Romans. A Roman tower that is underground. It lessens the elevated position of the church's visual impact. Iron gates separating the church's street entry from it are present. It is concealed by a sharp stone arch. Beyond a little courtyard is the nineteenth-century facade with twin bell towers. It was embellished with contemporary biblical art. A second little courtyard is accessible via the steps and entrance. It leads to the exterior porch from the eleventh century.

I loved this old church, one of the jewels of Coptic Cairo. It has very old and unique icons, some dating back to the 5th century AD, relics of saints and patriarchs, vitrals and painting as well as a beautiful courtyard leading up to the stairway to the church entrance. A must place to visit while in Cairo.

Gorgeous church with very unique woodwork and architecture. The story is amazing and it has been well kept for its age. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you are a history buff.

This is a must visit place in egypt. It has some great history associated to it from alexanders and romans. Unlike the Pharaohs, this is a great variety of history to learn from in Egypt. The staff is really amazing. They offer free tours for the sake of GOD. There is some repair work also going on there but overall, a great place to visit.

One of Cairo's hidden gems , it has alot of tourist's attention which makes it such a busy place on weekends, but i recommend going on weekdays when it's less busy, the history and church architecture are mesmerizing!

Built on top of Roman ruins, it's pretty interesting site for historical education. Lots of art on display and they still do weekly services here on top of daily tours.

For more understanding of Egypt history… you should try visiting the 7 churches in this area… what a mix of culture and history in an extremely rich context… even the synagogue there is mixing between 3 religions.
A must see

Unbeknownst to me, the church is built over the grounds where Mary and baby Jesus hid while in Egypt. The church is ancient and found inside are many reliques, such as the bones of many martyred saints. It's a place to pray as well as a tourist attraction.
