One of the most well known landmarks of Cairo, one of three remaining gates of the city wall built by fatimid 969. The tow minarets above the gate were built by sultan almoed Sheikh from the mameluk era 14th century. You can climb the minarets and enjoy breathtaking view over old Cairo watching the famous Citadel, Saleh talaaee Mosque, almoez street and more

Beautiful old gate and part of the walls that once guarded Fatimid Cairo

Highly recommended with a guide. You can go alone and it's very safe, I went alone and people were friendly. Don't be intimidated if someone offers to explain a monument to you or offer you anything. Respectfully reject or just don't reply and keep walking, they don't bother you. The place is literally a walk through hundreds of years of history, and what's fascinating is that people still actually live and work there, many doing the same when e that was done there in the past. But to really make the most of your trip hire a tour guide before you go.

Definitely one of my highlights of Cairo! While the gate and its towers have a interesting history itself, the views were the highlight for me. You can climb the gate and then even both minarets on top of it. Inside the minaret there is no light and it’s quite steep but the views are definitely worth it. Pricing is fair and you could get some additional information by the guard for a little tip.

Walk through these gates into the old city just after sunset, and watch the place come alive and light up. Safe, busy, bustling. Hardly any hassling (basically none) being a tourist.

Bab Zuweila is one of three remaining gates in the city wall of the Old City of Cairo.

It was also known as Bawabbat al-Mitwali during the Ottoman period. It is considered one of the major landmarks of the city and is the last remaining southern gate from the walls of Fatimid-era Cairo in the 11th and 12th century.

It’s also the gate where they hang the heads of numerous Mongols leaders and fighters under Hulagu and it’s also the gate where the Ottomans hung Sultan Tuman Bay and defeated the Mamluk state.

Its architecture is very beautiful and the minarets of al-Muayyad mosque right behind the gate give the overall sight extra beauty and uniqueness.

Very nice structure and awesome view! The entrance is 40 EGP, you do not need to pay more for climbing the towers!!! Somebody tried to take money from us for climbing the towers posing as a guide and also wanted a tip for telling us things while following us around, which we did not wish. If you are careful of those things, this is definitely worth a visit! Highly recommend.

Definitively recommend climbing up the minaret, but be careful at the highest level because there is only a shaking rusty ladder. It offers a great view at the city’s most important landmarks.

Excellent little part of Islamic Cairo history. Little visited we basically had the gate to ourselves. One can climb the minarets but the spiral staircase can be quite tricky. Make sure you have a light.

Very attractive place to visit in Egypt specially when you want to feel like you are in middle ages, when you want to get back in the past and see people wearing like Aladdin and like ottoman people too 😍

A very impressive medieval gate combined with a mosque. For 40LE (20LE for students) you can get to the viewing point, which has very beautiful views over Cairo. But safety is an issue so please be careful!

Bab Zuweila or Metwally Gate is one of the gates of "Old Cairo" in the Egyptian capital, Cairo. This door or gate is famous for being the gate under which the heads of the messengers of Hulagu, the leader of the Tatars, were hung when they came to threaten Egypt, which eventually led to the defeat of the Mongols and the emergence of the Mamluk state. Ottoman, heralding the end of the Mamluk state.

Ba'ab Zuweila is the best to see Islamic Cairo from above. Also, you can see alot of mosques there. It's always calm in weekdays, so you can enjoy the view peacefully.

A very wonderful place, especially when going up to the top of the great wall, and I saw the whole place from the top.
