I once read that it is considered the 2nd most beautiful mausoleum/shrine in the world, second only to the Taj Mahal. And that is not an exaggeration!

It lies in the heart of the Moez Street, the world’s biggest Islamic open-air museum. The architecture, decoration, ornaments, are all stunning! Coupled with the fact that this place has a long history, has been renovated many times, and has served many purposes (mosque, madrasa, mausoleum, hospital), it’s really one of the most iconic places in Cairo and all of Egypt.

This is another site that hasn’t quite made it into the tourist mainstream but it’s fantastic! A complex of about a dozen seperate locations that have been restored and renovated and were the former residence of ottoman nobility. Really beautiful and no crowds whatsoever

Amazing place with splendid architecture and a great view from the top.

PLEASE NOTE: going up on the roof as well as climbing the tower are not offered officially and it is not suitable for small children: there are dangerous places where there are no rails to prevent one from falling.

Constructed in 1285 AD, Qalawun complex is one of the fine examples of Mamluk architectecture, which is also regarded as a major structure in the very heart of Old Cairo on city's famous and historic Al-Muizz street. As a complex, Qalawun complex has a mosque, a religious school, a hospital and moseleum of Mamluk Sultan Qalawun, who commissioned this complex.

Incredible complex and a great example of the Egyptian Mamluk architecture and its richness.

Situated in the heart of al-Mui’zz street in the center of Islamic Cairo, the complex consists of a tomb, madrasa, mosque, and a hospital, arranged on either side of a long, central corridor.

The exterior structure of the Qalawun complex has many unique firsts in Mamluk architecture. The prayer hall of the madrasa projects into the street, asserting the prominence of the complex. The madrasa's three-story minaret, uniquely placed near the entrance of the building, has a papyrus cornice that harkens back to rule of the Pharaohs, serving to legitimize Mamluk rule. The 67-meter long façade of the complex displays similarities to Gothic or Crusader styles.

The massive size and the details of the complex were truly spectacular and i do highly recommend visiting it during your trip to Cairo.

A well preserved area with many historic buildings and structures. If you are lucky enough the guide will tell you many stories about the area and the Egyptian people living at that time. Above all, the complicated history of that period will be remembered in detail .

Beautiful walk, if the weather is pretty, lots of history! Early in the morning or around sunset would be ideal in summer to avoid the heat. Lots of street food, and a few restaurants. A nice walk to Khan El-khalili.

Very amazing! There are many old and big mosques. The mosque is very near between one to another one. Then, you can visit the mosque and find amazing stuff there. It's good sport for taking photo. You can walk to enjoy the scenery. If you like to visit ancient complex, this is a good choice!

It’s a great complex in Muiz street. Was nice walking through lots of buildings from Fatimid (mainly), and Mamluk and Ayubid era. I think it would have been better if I visited in the evening or at the weekend. I hear it gets quite vibrant then

Awesome architecture! What a fantastic architects and builders were! So much jewelry work! Admired! How many madrassas and mosques were built, people were spiritually developed and sought knowledge and God. When you touch history, you experience unreal emotions. A very beautiful place!

Really nice place to see Islamic structure and to take some photos
It's just one main mosque and tomb hall, don't expect a lot
Yet the details are astonishing
Nice place to take some photoshoot

Ticket for Egyptian and Arabs are 20 EGP
For foreigners it's higher not sure maybe 50

Make sure to avoid nagging tour guides, not needed for this small place, and they'll ask for tips eventually, beware

The whole complex is highly recommended and it would be great if you hire a guide or read thoroughly before going there. Some stories are really interesting and links different historical eras together! go at the early morning if you aim to get clear shots.

What an awesome historical place. Even the kids had fun walking around and exploring every corner. I wish there was more information available at the site, like maybe a small pamphlet or brochure for tourists.

Qalawun complex 🕌 (Arabic: مجمع السلطان المنصور قلاوون 🕌 ) one of the eight massive complexes in Cairo, Egypt, built by Sultan al-Mansur Qalawun in between year 1284–1285. The details was very unique and interesting to be snapped 📸🤎🧡.

My most favorite place in Cairo! This is said to be the biggest open museum in the world. You can get to walk from the Northern Old Cairo Gate, all the way to the Southern Gate. It's a very long walk. Qalawun complex in smack down the middle of it, right by Khan Al Khalili Market (I bet that's on your list). This is the best place for tourism in Egypt, no one to haggle you inside the sites, and if you want a guide, just ask for one of the guys standing by the gates. If you're lucky, he will be speaking English. If not, it wouldn't matter.
You get to enter multiple sites (7 at least?) with the same ticket. one of them (where you get the tickets) has one of the most beautiful domes in the world. The building used architecture from five different cultures.
