Well maintained mosque. Lots of upgrades and renovations since the last time i came by. The restrooms or the wudu area is in a separate building outside the mosque, which is really a good idea, but the inside of the restroom needs an upgrade, such as new bidets instead of plastic hose, toilet papers instead of water only, and slippers for a comfortable wudu. There should be security staff right outside of the gates to guide people where to go, and to not stand at the gate and cause traffic for those who are coming out and going in.

This is a beautiful mosque with excellent examples of original architecture blended with current-day worship and prayer. For the women visiting, don't worry too much about your attire because the attendants in the women's area will help you honor their faith traditions by allowing you to borrow a skirt and head covering.

Absolutely stunning old architecture... I saw it only on the outside on a stroll in Khan Al Khalili and it is very well lit externally and looks majestic. It will warrant a special visit during the day some other time.

Al Azhar Mosque very old mosque dated more than 1000 years old. Still in very pristine condition. There are Islamic lessons taken after every prayer for the common people to attend. Feeling inner calmness when entering this premises

Al-Azhar is the most important mosque in Egypt at all, and one of the historical strongholds for spreading and teaching Islam as well. It is also one of the most famous ancient mosques in Egypt and the Islamic world, and part of the Al-Azhar Al-Sharif Foundation. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the Fatimid state in Egypt, after Jawhar al-Siqali completed the conquest of Egypt in the year 969 AD. And he proceeded to found Cairo. He established the Grand Palace ...

This mosque is highly regarded for its historical value, being one of the most important & revered mosque in Islam. It is a huge mosque with a wide courtyard inside, and a few minarets around the mosque symbolizing different eras & dynasties of the caliphates in Egypt.

The prayer hall is huge, well-lit & cool although not being air-conditioned, the carpets are still new so quite comfortable for prayers. The ambiance is nice & calm for spiritual visitors. The toilets & ablution areas are well-maintained. The courtyard is wide, nicely tiled & clean enough for prayers.

Usually religious classes are held here after prayers, delivered by renowned Islamic scholars which attracts both locals & foreigners visiting the mosque. And the atmosphere here during Ramadan is just awesome, which made it a must-visit mosque for Taraweeh prayers.

Very beautiful mosque, with stunning architecture. Definitely worth visiting if you are already in Islamic Cairo.

Our brief visit coincided with prayer time, so we didn't have to pay an entrance fee.

It has been some years since my last visit and actually wasn't eager to go back since I was last there. Nevertheless, I was there today and it was like I there for there first time. The renovations are wonderful and the overall environment was very warm and welcoming. The carpet was new. The bathroom and wudhu area was clean and spacious. I'll be visiting more أن شاء الله.

Beautifully constructed mosque, and a huge part of Islamic Cairo. They have really well educated guides as well, who distribute free books in several languages regarding Islam. The area is huge, and oftentimes you’ll find kids playing around in the open space. They have separate prayer rooms for men and women, both beautifully adorned and decorated.

The most incredible space, the central yard with the white floor is so beautiful. The students and faithful, men and women, were either studying or peacefuĺly resting in the shade. A truly magical cultural and religious experience.

Al-Azhar Mosque, the beacon of knowledge and faith, and one of the historical strongholds for the spread of Islam and peace among nations and countries and the most famous in Egypt and the world Islam
Al-Azhar Mosque and University for more than a thousand years on June 22, 972 AD opened the Al-Azhar Mosque to pray, which is currently one of the most important and ancient mosques and universities in the world and the oldest existing impact of the Fatimid state in Egypt ..

On April 4, 970, the Fatimid caliph al-Muizz, the religion of God, laid the cornerstone of the Al-Azhar Mosque, that is, in the same year in which the leader Jawhar al-Skali opened Egypt and ordered the construction of Cairo, and the construction of the mosque was completed on June 22, 972 AD
The historians differed on the reason for naming the Al-Azhar Mosque, some of whom attributed it to Mrs. Fatima Al-Zahra, which is more likely according to the Al-Azhar page, and there are those who attributed the name to the presence of the mosque between the luxurious and splendid palaces that surrounded it.
And after its inauguration, Al-Azhar became a center of education, and dozens of scholars were employed to give lessons, laying the foundation for what could become the leading university in the Islamic world, where Al-Azhar is the second oldest university to exist continuously in the world after the University of Al-Karaouine.
Al-Azhar Mosque played a major national role in the modern era in disseminating science and science
Teaching in Al-Azhar at the beginning of the twentieth century was carried out through educational seminars and the study was divided into three primary, secondary and higher stages, and the duration of education in each of them is four years, and the successful student in each of them is granted a certificate of completion of the stage.

In 1961 the Egyptian government issued Law No. 103, which formally created Al-Azhar University and became one of the bodies of Al-Azhar for specialized higher education, along with other bodies for education before the first university stage, and another for the Supreme Council of Al-Azhar, and a third for the Islamic Research Academy, which is concerned with the dissemination of Islamic culture He wrote heritage, and advocacy and student delegations in the outside world and their subsistence
