My partner and I arrived at this little park on a cold, rainy January afternoon. The sun had already set and the monument (entitled "The Abandoned Room") created entirely in bronze in 1996 by the artists Karl Biedermann and Eva Butzmann, was silent and in the dark lulled by the rustling of the tree branches and the slight buzz of the activities towns not far from the small park.

The lights of the houses around allowed it to be seen, albeit barely, a puddle of rainwater just in front made it difficult to reach it to photograph it up close and yet all these minimal difficulties made our visit extremely intense and moving.

In the houses around, given the time of day, people were having dinner, talking, watching a film, some studying, some reading; in the distance someone was playing music. In the 1930s, hundreds of Jews were beaten in this timeless place on just such an evening. In the following years many Jewish families who lived here will be torn from their homes to be taken to concentration camps where many will never return.

A table, two chairs, one of which has fallen, an abandoned room, this is what this monument represents. This "absence of life" vividly communicates to us (without however showing it) the horror of what happened on November 10, 1938, that historic episode of anti-Semitic violence and intolerance which was called "Kristallnacht". On the floor of the monument itself, the words of the poet and Nobel laureate Nelly Sachs are engraved in bronze.

We move away from the monument in silence. Who knows where those Jewish people who lived in the rooms of the houses around them in those years will be? Will they be able to escape? Will they all have been deported? Were they all killed?
.
We remain silent with eyes shining with emotion. We move away to choose a place where we can have dinner and in this simple thought we understand how lucky we have been to enjoy freedom and how much it must be protected and preserved for everyone.

Beautiful little park with very simple and original monument with fallen chair (because of all Jewish people arrested).

I stumbled across this sculpture unintentionally and found it very moving I’m not in Berlin right now but a friend is and I just looked this sculpture up so he can go see it too. It’s worth a visit I believe.

This is interesting how it is related to "Kristallnacht" and what it is supposed to remind. It was a bit hard to spot without Maps though...!
