Interesting history and very impressive. In great views of the city and worth coming to visit. It's massive so you can take as little or as long as you want here. I would recommend bringing water up as it's pretty hot.

Nestled in the heart of Cartagena, the San Felipe de Barajas Fort is an architectural gem steeped in history. As an avid traveler, I was drawn to this fortress by its rich heritage and stunning panoramic views. From the moment I stepped foot inside, I was transported back in time to an era of colonial intrigue and maritime conquest.

The sheer scale of the fortifications is awe-inspiring, a testament to the ingenuity and determination of its builders. Exploring the labyrinthine tunnels and ramparts, I couldn't help but marvel at the strategic prowess that went into its design. The interactive exhibits dotted throughout the site provided valuable insights into its military significance and the stories of those who defended it.

One of the highlights of my visit was ascending to the highest point of the fort, where I was rewarded with breathtaking views of Cartagena's skyline and the shimmering Caribbean Sea beyond. It's a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts or anyone simply looking to soak in the beauty of their surroundings.

The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share anecdotes and answer any questions I had about the fort's history. Additionally, the well-maintained grounds and facilities ensured a comfortable and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.

Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone in search of unforgettable vistas, the San Felipe de Barajas Fort is a must-visit destination in Cartagena. I can't recommend it highly enough – be sure to add it to your itinerary when exploring this vibrant city.

We walked in without tickets, just bought here.

Don't need to buy into the tour guide, they have a spot up at the top called "Hospital" where they offer an informative video of the castle/fortress. PLUS a reprieve from the heat!

So fun to walk around the tunnels, they're not too lengthy. Just the right amount of panic before you hit a dead end or the way out.

Great way to see the entire city of Cartagena, hence why the structure is here!

If you love ancient architecture and history, this is a great place to visit in Cartagena. I purchased a ticket and wandered on my own through the castle, but I noticed there were many people with guides if that's more your thing. I recommend buying some water before you go in because you won't get another chance until you get to the store at the top of the castle that supports a local school for underprivileged kids in the Gethsemane neighborhood. There are great views of the city from the castle and many photo ops.
The only downside of my visit was the two cruise ships that offloaded passengers right about the time I arrived, so it was crowded.
There was a delightful man dressed in historic costume playing a trumpet who was extremely grateful for a small tip for enjoying the music. A dollar goes a long way for him.

Amazing structure. Totally worth the visit. Definitely recommend visiting this fort (Castillo). I also recommend going to the “Hospital” they have AC there which is great because it gives you a break from the heat and also you can learn more about the history behind the fortification.

Beautifully conserved, an unmissable while at Cartagena. You can visit it throughout the day, although you should do so around 8 am or after 4 pm (since at noon it gets too hot and there’s barely any shadow around) - although it has great views and you can see the whole landscape of Cartagena’s center, plus you get to take great pictures!

What a beautiful piece of history.
Proud of the Colombian culture

This fortress its locate near the historical center and the colorful neighborhood of Getsemani.
It’s still in an incredible conservation state.
With its big angled walls and its cannons it was the main defense point of Cartagena de Indias and south America itself.
The visit of this monument is a must while being in Cartagena. A guided tour would make the visit more meaningful since you will learn all the history and fun facts about the fortress and its surroundings.

It has a lot of viewpoints where to admire the beautiful views of Cartagena from all sides.

Very recommended.
A must!

Wish we had the opportunity to spend more time here, we ran in on our way to the marina for a boat tour. Beautiful and quiet if you go early in the morning!

We got a private tour guide - Gary - who was deeply entertaining though his English was moyenne. Great historical location. Nice views of Cartagena.

Made a quick stop for pictures. The throng of “vendors” was crazy. Lots of trinkets, hats, water and such. lol, even had some ladies in old world dresses, to give you the opportunity to take their picture ,,, for a price! Word to the wise, set your price, don’t ask how much!!

Great history lesson.
Very very hot, so go in the morning. 30 Pecos admission. Gift shop at the top, also sell water.

Well preserved castle. It’s big enough to get you without air if you climb it in one single breath!
The heat is also a problem but when you find a tunnel you will fill relieve due the air running through them. It felt so magical getting lost in this tunnels and eventually finding a place at the top of the castle to get a view of Cartagena. That view is priceless.
If you have more energy, you can keep climbing to the top where there is a souvenirs store and fresh cold limonada that cost COP 6k.

Visit this place if you're a military history aficionado as it details Cartagena's early years under Spanish rule, especially when it was under attack from the British. Even though the fort itself is uninspiring, it's history and significance to Cartagena can hardly ever be questioned.

Castle San Felipe de Barajas in Cartagena, Colombia. Originally built in 1536 with a final expansion in 1763. This world heritage site has endured attacks from both pirates and governments over its history. Now you can roam the castle and tunnels underneath that once housed the soldiers and cannons that defended the city!

Don't expect to easily walk around. You will be inundated with vendors constantly. There are so many it's hard to concentrate on the history.

Just history, it is like a time machine that takes you to the roots of Colombian culture. Plis, the fort is beautiful.

We went very early in the morning, arriving before any other guests, so that we could beat the heat. It was still pretty hot, but it was peaceful and gave us a lovely view of Cartagena.

Nice stop first thing in the morning. We started our day here, trying to beat the heat. Very impressive fort built atop the hill. Steep walk up the ramps to the top of the hill. If you can get a tour guide, lots of information on the history of and importance of this fort. There are a couple of tunnels and walkways to go down as you explore your way around the fort.
