Kalamata

We have visited this shop several times to buy Mediterranean food for the past decade. Owner is always kind and calculates the total in his head with ±10 cents accuracy. Our initial visit, when my child was just 5 years old, left a lasting impression as the owner surprised him with a complimentary chocolate bar. Fast forward to the present, at 14 years old, my child received another free chocolate treat from the owner. This consistent generosity over the years is truly commendable, and I wholeheartedly believe the owner deserves a well-deserved shoutout!

Love this place! Their selection of olives and cheeses is to die for, and the whole rest of the store has phenomenal and interesting products that are practically spilling off the shelves. The staff are also quirky and funny. Every grocery store should be like this!

When I lived downtown, I would visit here weekly. Now that we moved to the burbs, my visits have become less frequent. This place is full of character, and charm. Their prices on deli meat and cheese is very fair. Their prices on everything are actually really good. They can’t seem to stock provolone cheese, but there are many other options available. The aisles are small, but packed to the nines. The guys who work there are friendly and the location is pretty central and decent! A must visit!

They carry a lot of products that are amazing and hard to find. Sometimes I play a little game here and buy something I have no knowledge about (as long as it’s $5 or under). Like Greek cherry shampoo, which I must say is heavenly.

Moved to the area about two months ago and this is by far the best corner store I’ve ever had the pleasure of shopping at. Friendly staff. VERY fair prices. And literally everything you would want from a corner store. I’d give it six stars if I could.

Where can I start with little golden secret for authentic European foods?
Well, Kalamata Grocery is a tiny corner store with a HUGE selection!
They offer spices that are ground, whole, natural, organic and any are from Greece.
If you like olives then look no further as Kalamata Grocery have more then you can possibly name including small to jumbo jars or olives by the gram.
Follow this up with amazing dried meats, sausages, cheeses and other charcuterie and you have an amazing antipasto spread.
They also feature handmade Ethiopian ‘pancake’ flatbread, pitas and tortillas.
There are other breads that I have not seen before so check these out too.
Kalamata Grocery also offers a small variety of chilled food, fruits and veggies.
For vegans, there is a large variety of European pastas, beans, canned and jarred foods that are often labelled organic, no preservatives and non-gmo.
If you like fish, then check out there freezer selection and ask about fresh-something I forgot to do.
For FETA FANS, you can get a literal bucketful of Greek Feta here!
If you have a sweet tooth them check out Kalamata Grocery Turkish Delight, Greek & German Chocolates as well as many other countries treats.
The owner told me that if I didn’t like anything I bought to bring it back.
THAT IS A+ CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!
He even gave me some chocolate to sample.
Kalamata Grocery is certainly my new go to 1-stop shop for all thing authentically European!!!
UPDATE: They also have fresh nuts, dried fruit and a humungous baking/pastry section.
I guess they have about 2x the variety of large specialty European grocery stores at 1/2 ‘HALF’ the price!!!

My last review was 2 years ago and time for an update. Things have gotten better at Kalamata during COVID. Their continued service to the community is stellar. You have GOT to try their fresh FETA come in weekly from Greece!!! Still 5 stars. Thanks Gus and K-Crew:)

One of the best Greek grocery stores in Calgary. Family owned and oriented, best food and best service here just like the old days!

I love this place!

This is a great place to buy special food kinds. We always buy "Mate", which is a kind of herbs you drink with a hot water. We usually also buy oriental kinds of food, which we won't find in another place. This place is different from any other food store. This place is unique.

After one year of being in Calgary, I decided to visit this place again to check its situation during this pandemic.

I took new pictures of it, and wanted to mention few things for new visitors or costumers.

First of all, this place is not big as safeway or wallmart. It's allowed for 10 personnel to be inside at once. Even if you were alone, you should take care of your steps inside as there is no big space to move around.

Secondly, they don't accept credit cards in this store, so you can buy using your debit card or by cash.

Finally, if you don't put a mask on your face, you will not be served. It's a must to wear a mask.

The owners of this business are the most honest and compassionate people I have met. They were so kind when my daughter opened a package and I didn't have the correct amount to pay them. They have delicious food items from Greece and the Mediterranean. They embody a local business that gives back to community and should be supported.

This hole in a wall May look crowded and old and untidy but if you want an authentic old school grocery, this is it. Best feta and olives in calgary. Full stop. Then add in the European foods and it is a weekend must stop at place. If you have not been here, go out of your way to change that.

If you're not buying your olives and feta from here, what are you waiting for!!? This place has so much soul and charm. The feta and olives selection is amazing. I highly recommend the Macedonia feta! Thoughtful customer service, phenomenal prices. One visit and you'll be hooked.

This is my go to store for anything Mediterranean, the prices are better than any grocery store and the selection of foods is amazing. Wonderful people!

Amazing service, the guy at the front was so kind. We were trying to buy a candy bar but our card declined, he gave us the bar for free, and even let us have free samples from their olive/dairy bar knowing our cards werent working and that we couldnt buy anything. 10/10 service, the food was so fresh, delicious, and would definitely visit again. Please support this local business, they genuinely deserve it!

Such a fun place to explore and tempt your taste buds with items you will not find in most stores. We meandered through the isles imagining all of the delicious dishes that we could put together will all of the delightful ingredients. Ended up with a few basics on last trip but will certainly be back to expand my culinary horizons.

Charming spot where the food is delicious and tastes authentic. Olives and feta cheese are amazing! Staff is friendly and it feels very homey there :)

One of the best shops Ive experienced. Nestled in a historic block on 11th St SW, its open early, and closes late. Prices are great for a "Euro-import" shop; the store is extremely well laid out... its a visual treat to gaze at the colourful array of product adorning the shelves; chosen for quality, and value. Service is amazing... friendly; knowledgeable; professional. If you are a foodie and/or like too cook this is "the place." If not, go there anyway....for a uniquely pleasant experience.

Love this place. Great prices and great selection. The Greek counter is the best and I love how they always put a smiley face on my cheese order. Plus they've got all kinds of non-European gems too! Just keep in mind they don't do credit cards
