This has to be the first time I have ever written a bad review, but this is the worst racial profiling experience I have ever experienced in my life. On the 23rd of December 2023, at around 5pm we were passing through Canberra, and since we were sleeping over, we decided to get a bottle of wine. The minute we walked in, one of their assistants, who looked at us as if we were about to steal something, asked if he could help us with anything, to which we replied no since we knew what we were looking for. When we proceeded to the checkout, he refused to serve us, even though I showed him my ID copy. He also requested that my wife show her ID, which we showed him on the phone, by the way, but he rejected it, saying he wanted an original copy. There were people in the store buying alcohol with minnows and teenagers in their company, and many of them were clearly younger than us, but he decided to harass us instead. I asked him to show me the law that says if I'm buying a bottle of wine and my wife is in my company, she should also show some ID. I also asked him why he was only applying this to us, and he didn't give me the answers. He even cheekily told me that even if I came alone the next day, he was not going to serve me

We proceeded to our BnB to take her original ID copy, but we wanted to make a complaint to the manager because I felt he had targeted us as we were the only people of colour who walked into that store, for which they refused to give us their manager's contact details or email address. He even told me that my complaint is stupid and I can report it wherever I want. I proceeded to take his details so I could take it further.

We have been in Australia for almost a year, and everyone has been wonderful to us, but the treatment we got from this gentleman reminded me of what is wrong in our society. We were the only people of colour who walked into that shop, and the fact that he chose us for this harassment over a number of customers who were walking in and out of the store left me with a terrible feeling in my stomach. I also noticed that this is not the first racial profiling review on this branch

My friend suffered serious racial discrimination here. After checking her ID, the cashier said, "I suspect you are North Korean, so I can't sell alcohol to you. " That's totally unacceptable. She is an adult and can legally consume alcohol. The inner logic of this cashier was "any Asian can be North Korean; I hate North Korean; so I don't sell alcohol to them according to my own law." That is extreme Racism covered up by political opinions. My friend came here for a holiday to visit friends from South Korea with her children. I feel terribly sorry for her that she had to suffer from this kind of discrimination in Australia and bring back bad memories home. I hope the manager can take this seriously. Please feel free to contact me for the time when this happened and a description of this cashier.
