Wow! 🤩
What a night to choose to visit Java Restaurant on the 40 years birthday. Johan the owner and waiter and his 80+ year old Mum have been serving delicious meals to the community for 40 years. We were treated to exceptional service, including a free glass of Verve champagne. The entrees were outstanding and the mains were so tasty. I Highly recommended the beef rendang. The photos don’t do the food justice! The many customers on this busy Monday night were all on a first name basis with the owner. His friendliness brings many people back. We also enjoyed the dessert Es Campur and a complimentary cupcake. The menu is huge and we will be back soon.

Outstanding dining experience, we went on week night and lucky to get a table as the others all had reservation and I understand why

Stunning food!

The best indonesian food in town. The level of authenticity is same with restaurants found in Indonesia.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS PLACE (CASH ONLY)! Some of our favorite food in Sydney. My wife and I came here 3 separate times to eat over a 4 day span because we loved it so much. The owner and staff of the restaurant are so friendly and work so well as a team when the place is packed (plus they always have a smile on their faces).

The first night was extremely busy with a couple of large parties, but the owner and staff did very well keeping up with it all and we were served in a timely manner. The owner even brought us out a small dish of the Indonesian style peanuts, which was unexpected but very nice (they were delicious too) We ordered Martabak Daging (beef, egg, onion and shallot wrapped in crispy pastry), Nasi Goreng (Indonesian style fried rice), and Rendang Sapi (slow cooked beef chunks in coconut cream and gravy). Everything was so good and you can’t go wrong with any of these options but our favorite dish this night was the Rendang Sapi as the flavors really popped and the meat fell apart because it was so tender (recommend a rice dish to eat with it).

The second night, the restaurant was equally as busy as the first night with smaller parties, but we were seated immediately. We ordered Satay Ayam (chicken skewer with peanut sauce), Empal goreng (fried premium beef chunks served with sambal terasi/spicy dip), Kwetiaw goreng (stir fried thick rice noodle with chicken, fish cakes, vegetables, prawn pieces and egg). Once again, all the dishes were outstanding but my favorite dish was the Satay Ayam because the chicken was extremely tender and the peanut sauce was to die for (I wanted to lick the plate clean). My wife’s favorite dish was the Kwetiaw Goreng because it was loaded with veggies and the texture of the thick rice noodle was on point.

The third day for lunch the restaurant was much less busy and the owner brought us out some complimentary shrimp chips that were very unique and tasty. We ordered Ayam goreng sereh (fried chicken marinated in lemon grass and spices), Laksa of Java (soup dish served with vermicelli noodles, topped with bean sprouts, chicken, prawn cutlets, fish cake pieces and egg slices), and Nasi Kuning Polos (rice flavored with turmeric, lemon grass and coconut cream). Our favorite dish was the Ayam Goreng Sereh because there was a good variety of chicken pieces (1/2 chicken) and it was practically falling off the bone. The chicken had a nice lemon grass flavor that was not overpowering.

We wish we had more time in Sydney to try the rest of the amazing Indonesian dishes that are served at Java Kitchen. I can’t say enough about how nice the owner and staff are. We will definitely be coming back to this place when we come back to Sydney.

Invited some friends for a rijsttafel lunch at the Java Restaurant in Randwick. A really nice, unassuming place with delicious Indonesian food. You can order the rijsttafel/rice table for two and upwards.
Some of the dishes included were soto ayam, beef rendang, chicken and beef satay, lumpia, gado gado, spicy prawns and ayam bakar. It is BYO and there is a very nice bottle ship on Alison Street nearby.
Service was excellent, owner was very friendly, and most of all, the food was YUMMMMM!

Wonderful Indonesian food. So many options, all at great prices. I always get Nasi Rames dish, which includes beef rendang, fried chicken, egg, rice, and a mixed vegetable dish with peanut sauce. They allow you to bring your own wine, because they don't have a licence to serve alcohol. Go next door to buy your wine. Excellent, friendly service as well.

A hidden gem in Randwick 😋 From the fish cakes, to eggplant, beef and even morning glory - everything was so delicious! Came at such a busy time and service was great. Joe is amazing, had a smile on the whole time. Will definitely come again!

Some of the best food you’ll have in Sydney. A lovely local joint with generous servings, incredibly diverse menu and great service. Even the desserts were delicious, would highly recommend.

We love the food here.

My favourite would be the sate ayam. The flavour is as I would expect. The smokiness of the chicken combines perfectly with the sate sauce they use. Yes, sate is different everywhere in Indonesia but I’d rate this as an authentic east Javanese flavour experience.

The Gado-Gado is also superb, with an Australian slant due to the availability of Australian ingredients.

My photos also include the ketoprak. Hmmm there’s a peanut sauce emphasis here. The ketoprak is of course excellent and “asli” ( original).

The empal is a standout at this restaurant. It does take some time to prepare so on this visit we were disappointed - sold out due to a recent big order. It is a meat dish cooked in a very carefully balanced combination of spices and flavours such as candlenut. You must try this!

Also uploaded was a photo of our fu yung hai - omelette. It was so delicious I think I monopolised it at our share-plate table.

Our group presents with multiple allergies and coeliac disease. Needless to say they are very helpful.

Only thing to watch out for here is they do cash only.

Oh yeah, sorry for the shadows in the photos. Will do better next time! 😊

One of the best restaurants for authentic Indonesian food in Sydney (maybe even in the country). Very affordable food and service is always exceptional. More intricate detail throughout the interior can be added in for a more transient journey to Indonesia but other than that it provides a very homey feel. Never gets loud inside even when all tables are full of patrons.

Best indo food in Sydney! Highly recommend this place! I had low expectations considering the quality and flavour of most Indo places in Sydney, but this one blew me away! All of their dishes were spot on and sooo flavourful, especially their Beef Rendang, Ikan Pepes, Sum Sum Goreng (salt & pepper bone marrow) & Lamb Martabak. They do BYO free of charge. Will be back for sure to order a ridiculous amount of food😂🤍

We got parking just outside the store.
We reserved for 6. The place is a bit cramped, and there is only 1 waiter + 1 waitress. The food was delicious, the spicy chicken sauce was not too spicy for us, and I personally loved it. They kindly provided small bowls for us to share desserts ($9 each es bumi hangus, es teller). It costs around ~150 for 6 people. Greatly recommend!

I recommend the Java restaurant. We were in a large group of 10. We were able to sample many different dishes and all were delicious and large enough to share.

The service was great. The staff were friendly and attentive (and kept our water topped up).

The only thing you need to be aware of is the restaurant is cash only, so either bring enough money with you or be careful not to order too much.

Hopefully we will be back soon.

Beautiful authentic fresh Indonesian.
Java is an unassuming little restaurant located on Avoca St in Randwick.
Joe and his family run this fabulously delicious tasting restaurant.
No faults, always incredible!
Extensive menus and very well priced.
We have tried many dishes but always seem to drift back to our favourites. Chicken with chilli sauce, nasi goreng and water spinach.
I can’t remember the correct names for the dishes (Joe just remembers what it is we like) 😁

Java is a small family owned Javanese restaurant that is simply outstanding! In fact, when you say ‘thanks, that was amazing’, the owner says ‘thanks, I will pass it in to my mum’!!!
The food is fresh, authentic and generous... atmosphere relaxed and prices cheap! Try the grilled fish (below), the prawns, egg plant or nasi goring - or simply pick the chef’s menu - all of it amazing! It’s byo and it’s fun... I randwick institution!!!!

Great local favourite. If you love Indonesian food and spicy as you like with the added bonus of bumping into friends...it's the go to place.
