I was wondering what scared the trees.
Jokes aside, there is basalt lava flow between layers of limestone and either tephra or calcreted ash near the top. The weathering patterns of different layers is markedly different. Some of the petrified forrest is not limestone but the basalt coating of it.
Found the wagon wheel tracks as well.
