A beautiful place to visit. With a few different walk trails of varying capabilities.
BBQ and undercover picnic table available.
Public restrooms.
Lots of information points throughout the track.
Amazing natural flora and fauna to observe.

2 hikes available we did both
One up to the volcanic crater rim (steep-ish but steps all the way) not a long hike
The other starts at the rim and is far more challenging, it goes all the way round the rim and is unformed in places, step and lots narrow rock squeezes, also high winds but perfect if up for a challenge. Lots of animal traces and highly scenic

Well worth the walk up to the crater. Easy access vis very clever "staircase".

Nice short walk around the rim and into the crater of Mount Schank. A great place to visit if you have a few hours to spare. The trail is easy to follow but the section into the crater is a little overgrown as that part of the trail is not maintained.

Excellent park, stready walk up the mountain. Keep the kids close to you during the walk as there is a fair bit of area without rails. Walk is well worth it.

Mount Shank hike was very steep but well worth it for the walk around the top Ridge of the volcano.

Great walk to the rim. The steps are safe and well placed for the steep climb.

1038 steps of walk to see the beautiful crater hole. I like this natural beauty totally. Firstly, I don't wanna walk,but changed my mind and went to the look out point, it was completely different than I have expected. It was no nice experience to see this limestone crater hole, which is few kms (12mins) away from blue lake.

Get your walking shoes on and get ready to trek. This is a great climb. Signs at the location say that the walk will take 30min but that is being generous. It will probably take 15mins to get to the top. There are resting benches if you do tire easily so don't be put off. You can rest as much as you want.

You can also walk around the rim of the crater and even walk down to the centre. Its a must do for anyone visiting mount Gambier.

Great short walk. About 2.7km from carpark & around the rim. Even saw some wallabies and a goat!

Fantastic walk and view of the extinct volcano and surrounding area. Wish we had more time to explore.
Nice to know there are toilets here as well.

Mount Shank is a "must visit" when you're in Mount Gambier. Stiff/Paved walk up to the Rim of this Dormant Volcano.

A good short but strenuous walk up and into the volcano. Superb views in all directions at the top.

We got totally lost using the GPS. Worth the climb.

Easy parking and around 15min walk up the steps to have an awesome view!

Did the walk up Mount shank, myself my husband and my six-year-old… Definitely steep, if you’re not fit it will be an effort. But there is sort of steps in the track almost all of the way up which does help. Amazing view all the way to Port McDonald from the top. My kid loved it! Of course you can hike down into the bottom of the cater as well if you’re keen…

brilliant spot took me about 30mins to get to top because im old and fat but man was it worth it.

Awesome view, nice walking

Car park was clean, facilities were clean and maintained, only thing everyone was wondering and looking around for was details of which direction is the short and long walk at the base of the climb. The steep walk to the left didnt really look like a path and without signage it almost looked like a self made shortcut where people could get lost..

Always enjoy coming here about 15 kms south of Mount Gambier It is a steep climb but the views are worth the effort make to allow time to walk around the Crater Rim 3/4 hour extra.
