Mt Schank, about 13km south of Mt Gambier in southeastern South Australia, is considered to be one of the most recently active volcanoes in Australia, last erupting around 6000 years ago. The track to the top is fairly steep but the reward is a nice view looking down into the crater. A track goes right around its' rim and another descends to the crater floor.

A fairly steep walk up, but the trail is made with concrete ramp grips that make the climb much easier. Plenty of shaded stops on the way up but def bring water for the doggos to hydrate and cool off. The effort is well worth the views at the top.

It's a great little spot with a stunning view of the volcanic crater. The walk is not at all difficult although the steps installed are really pain in the back. I am not sure why they chose to install these ladder style flat steps instead of the usual elevated steps. They are ok while going up but really pathetic when going down as some part of your feet is on the step and rest is in the place between steps causing your sole to ache after a while. In fact, I felt better when steps finally ended and normal gravel path started.
The walk around the crater rim is fun and not too difficult. There is also a small path which goes down to the bottom but it's covered in thick bushes so a bit treacherous to navigate.
Overall, it's fun spot to explore if you are in mt Gambier.

501 concrete steps to climb. Steps start about 25% of the way up. You need to be reasonably energetic.
But the views are fantastic.

Lovely walk. Well-made ramp to the rim, then a stunning walk round, maybe 30 mins. The track to the middle isn’t as gnarly as it looks. We may have rearranged the stone circle into an ancient fertility symbol.

The walk up and around the rim of the volcano isn't too challenging and is definitely a must. Great exercise and superb views from the top.

The scale of this place is quite phenominal. A steady hike to the top, but the views are incredible. Try and zoom in on my photo to get a perspective in size of this place: Closest ridge, centre, white dot.

Nice well maintained paths. Great views from the top (especially if you continue around to the other side once at the top).

Solid hike up the side of the crater from the carpark, but worth it for the view.

It's a volcano, albeit a quiet one, so that alone gives it awesomeness. Great walk up, and the view of the crater bowl and surrounding plains makes the climb well worth it. A must do if you are in the Mount Gambier area. And drop by Little Blue Lake too which is just up the road.

Lived in the Mount for 7 years and never been out here. The tough walk up hill is definately worth the view at the top. Day was overcast but he natural beauty of the farmland gave that real nice country feel. The view back to Mount gambier is great. Excellent activity for walking enthusiasts

Beautiful, first time walking on the crater of a ancient volcano. The hike was really interesting because before visiting I had the opportunity to watch a documentary on the volcanoes in Mt. Gambier.

Nice easy to moderate walk, clean, natural. I didn't see anyone when I was there, not sure how busy it gets.
