The Commissariat store museum is one of the only 2 buildings left in Brisbane which were built by convicts when Brisbane (Moreton Bay) was a penal settlement. Built in 1829 it initially 2 floors and the 3rd (top floor) added later in 1923. The Royal Historical society of Queensland occupies the building now and has some great exhibitions about the convict past of the building and Brisbane city in general. Absolutely worth a visit if you are history buff or would love to learn more about early life in Brisbane city.

Excellent find for those interested in the historical side of Brisbane!

We found this place on a whim exploring the areas around the Old Casino building and was pleasantly surprised as it initially appeared as a small one storey building from its entrance. Little did we know we stumbled on a large, history filled nugget of a gem.

Upon buying a ticket, they'll offer a free guided tour! Phil was extremely knowlegable and passionate, and we ended up strolling around for more than an hour happily chatting away!

We would never have enjoyed it as much if it weren't for our great tour guide.

Built in 1828 by convicts its a little window to our penal past. We had an amazing guide whose stories about the people and the colony bought the history alive. Exhibits from then and later years when the building was put to other uses are well set out and explained. Really good experience.

Amazing structures, went on a weekday so the place is not so crowded at all. Thank you I had a great time. Until next time.

It’s a small museum but you can learn a lot of history about Queensland convict history. There are three levels and many information to read. When we went there some primary students were visiting there to learn their local history. If you are interested in Australian history it worth to see. Entry fee is $7 adult as of September 2019.

A great place to understand the convict history at the start of European settlement in Brisbane. Pair this with a visit to the Brisbane Museum in the CBD to find out how they displaced and removed the Aboriginal population.

A wonderful and unique hidden gem at the heart of the Brisbane CBD. It has a rich history spanning all the way back to the convicts and I would highly recommend taking the guided tour to really immerse yourself in it all. The tour guides are incredibly kind and will have an answer to any questions you may have.

First visit to Brisbane and we were not disappointed. The Commissariat is not a grand building like some of the old buildings in the city but well worth a visit. It gives a glimpse into the history of Brisbane. Plenty of artefacts from the early days.

The entrance was $10 a person so I asked for a guide (Richard, i believe?) and he delivered - teaching us a lot of not only this place, but entire Australian history.

Very well run museum mostly staffed by volunteers of the Queensland Historical Society. It is well laid out over three floors with an air conditioned area set for serious research. It is one of only two buildings in Brisbane built by convicts (the other being The Windmill). It provides an excellent introduction to early settlements of Queensland including the Indigenous history. Staff are helpful and knowledgeable. Within an easy walk in the CBD. A bit of a hidden gem and an excellent start for visitors to be introduced to Brisbane and Queensland. Often have interesting speakers. Highly recommended.

Richard was a fantastic guide with a world of knowledge, I could have stayed for hours (ended up staying for 2!) Listening to all the historical knowledge he has. I came away knowing alot more about Aus history than I started with. The museum had some awesome historical artifacts that I wouldn't see any where else. Good job in preserving Australia history.

Excellent museum on Brisbane history. Interesting open elevator allows for easy access to all 3 floors. Manned by friendly volunteers. Free entry during the annual Brisbane Open House. Hosts regular talks on days of yore.

Awesome history from the outside to in, the staff are very helpful and informative and offer a guided tour, nice collection of convict period items laid out very well and practical. They now have a little elevator inside for wheelchairs.

Terrific snapshot of Brisbane's history. Very good static displays, easy access. Being in the city, parking is a premium in both spaces and pricing. Historical society of Qld is also based here. Very friendly staff and great resources.
