(Decommissioned) St John the Baptist Anglican Church

A nice little piece of Tasmanian History. It is not currently in use but the grounds are still maintained. Some lovely flowering trees surround the historic church, making it very photogenic. There is also a small cemetery within the grounds if you are wanting to explore more of the local history.

John the Baptist Anglican Church in Buckland was decommissioned with the last rector finishing in 2019.

The community bought the church. Friends of Buckland Church Inc raised funds to purchase the church and it has belonged to the community since December 2022. They are working to revitalise this historic building for the enjoyment of all.

We did. The church was unlocked and we let ourselves in. It was gorgeous. We loved the stained glass windows and the fact that it has been maintained as if it were still used for its original purpose. Inside was wonderful, outside was fascinating. The whole place is full of history and interesting stories no doubt.

We left a donation and I hope that others do to. It is an amazing thing that Friends of Buckland Church Inc. have done. Thank you!

My great great uncle built this church. His name was Reverend Friedrich Holdship Cox. What an incredible experience it was to visit a place that my ancestors created.
