Easy hike to the top for a glorious view. Well worth a stop. Dogs allowed on their leash. The path is steep in parts but also paved. Toilets at the bottom and plenty of info on the local history and geology.

This one is little bit away 20 mins from the town, but it is worth visiting, do take some time out to enjoy amazing views from the lookout point if you have extra time take a hike around the rim. It is a bit of a hike to the lookout point, but limestone steps on the path. Grade 4 hike over all. It's worth the walk to enjoy some good views.

Definitely worth stopping - you won’t regret the walk up to the crater. It took us 25mins return up to the lookout. I liked the plank stairs too. Probably unsafe to walk this in thongs/jandals so wear decent shoes. Sadly, we didn’t walk the crater as we were short on time.

The walk to the lookout is quite steep with lots of stairs. Well worth the walk for the amazing views from the top. There are toilets in the car park.

Gear up, for the hike up is short but steep. Great views from the trail up and a walk around the crater rim is easy enough after tackling the hike up. Surprised the 2 smaller crators adjoining have not been turned into walking trails. Baits have been layed so leave your fur babies at home.

Bit of a hike to get there but you get beautiful views of the crater and the surrounding area

Managed the walk-up here with some family and our 6 kids. Gets a little steep but well worth it when you get to the top. We didn't do the rim walk but I imagine it would have been breathtaking.

Very nice veiw from the top of the stairs. It is worth walking around the rim because the view the whole way round is magnificent. The walk up isn't as bad as it looks because those are not stairs they are just little notches of concrete for grip. Some wild life like wallabies and field mice.

Real effort to get up to the top but if you are reasonably fit you can do it in ten minutes. The the crater rim walk is pretty wild and the views and worth it. Very eerie at times due to the height and space you'll be in.

Bit of a workout to climb up but well worth the sweat, breathtaking views from the top. Don't forget the sunscreen, not a lot of shade on the rim and also windy. The path is very narrow at times, be careful. Toilets are available at the car park.

Amazing View, this is a dormant volcano and it looks spectacular!

The views from the top are fantastic in all directions from Mt Gambier to Port McDonnell.

This is a crater formed by volcanic activity around 5000 years back. Walk to the top of mount shank will test your physical condition.

A pathway of more than 1,000 steps leads to the dormant volcano's rim, offering extensive views over the surrounding plains and into the central crater. A reasonable level of fitness is required and a water bottle is recommended for hot days.

Nice walk up to the rim of Australia's most recent volcano. The path up is now concrete steps, and you can make your way around the rim.
Some of the lookout points are now overgrown, and certain sections are a narrow squeeze between rocks.

The walk from carpark to lookout is an easy 1 hour return. There are over 1000 steps, but they are quite shallow ... so more of a incline rather than steps. Then from the lookout which is on the rim, you can walk right around the rim of the crater, an easy 45 minutes loop. The rim walk is quite narrow in places with a bit of up and down following the contour of the rim. The view crom the rim to inside the crater is awesome. You can also trek down to the centre of the crater, approx 45 mins return. There are toilets and a picnic area with bbq at the car park and lots of shade. Fabulous walk.

Looking at the big hill sign says volcano walking track not far from main road into port McDonald is the turn off on the left of coming from Mt Gambier...the big hill is the outside of the crater and at the start of the walk there are toilets BBQ water and directions information boards and it's 30 minutes to get to the observation platform at the top ...it's a hard slog l only stopped once for a cig so it's pretty steep but doable if you just keep going there are a couple of bench seats on the way up that will help bring your heart rate back under control...it doesn't look a long way up from the road but trust me it's a mindset ...just keep going the look out at top is absolutely awesome fully worth the fighting the temptation to turn back a few times...
You can if your fit enough traverse the rim there is a track to the bottom of the volcano this would take a day l reckon it really is an unbelievable sight only available if you make it to the top..
Coming down is easier ...the track is good it it feels tiger snake country so keep your eyes on track for sunning tigers ..
Fully worth it .no chance for a wheelchair dogs are good mine had a ball..
5 stars amazing...

Great walk up, but can be quite steep so take it easy. If you manage to get to top, the view is fantastic! Worth if you can do it.

worth the walk up! super cool and it's great for any fitness levels, as you can stop at any point and get a good view. though the directions are a bit weird, i'd recommend you just follow the signs for the lookout point. they are quite clear.
