Dr. Ward will forever hold the title of the worst GP I have ever seen (& hopefully will ever see). When my 3 month old baby stopped drinking entirely & spiked a fever of over 40 degrees I knew immediately that something was seriously wrong with him. Dr. Ward condescendingly asked me at the start of our visit if I was a first time mother as he could “just tell”. He advised that I go home & open up all of the doors & windows in my house, to let the cold winter breeze (mid June Melbourne weather) reduce my newborn babies fever “naturally”. He told me to “relax” & said that my son would be fine if I did exactly as he said with cooling him down. Thankfully I was confident enough (& apparently much more knowledgeable about fevers in tiny infants than Dr. Ward was) to request a second opinion from a younger & much more competent doctor, who sent me straight to the emergency department. It turned out that my newborn baby had a Urinary tract infection secondary to Bacterial Meningitis, the doctors at the ED said to me upon arriving “why weren’t you referred here yesterday after the first GP visit, your son could be dead right now if it weren’t for you seeing the second GP”. We ended up spending a month living in the children’s hospital receiving IV antibiotic treatment for Bacterial Meningitis through a small central line placed into my sons chest. It still breaks my heart to this day that had some other parent been not as self assured or confident as I am in their parenting, & had put their faith in this fool that they could have ended up needing to bury their child. An intensive workshop on bedside manner & perhaps re-training in basic medicine would not go astray for you Dr. Ward.
