Place is simple BUT the food is 100 percent good Chinese food. Been to a lot of Chinese take aways but not even China Bar is that good. The food is seriously and surprisingly good. Atmosphere is mediocre, staff are nice but wouldn't say it's like 5 star service. Would recommend all their dumplings, their spring roll (damn it's a nice different you'll realise once you have it), their sweet and sour pork is infinitely better than anything I have tasted. And the servings are an excellent size for a very reasonable price. Fried rice is good but wouldn't say it's exceptional just really good fried rice. Veggie dishes are so good! Like really good.

Iconic venue with small tables and lovely atmosphere, almost always crowded.

Food is outstanding and well priced, the service is brusque and indifferent at best as they’re so busy, but not rude.

We came here after not wanting to wait at Shanghai Street as they were busy.

Great value and taste in the heart of china town. We had a variety of dumplings, noodles and vegetables and it was all very tasty and affordable. Highly recommend this place. The dumplings in chilli oil are delicious.

Had a great experience here. We ordered vegetarian dumplings, some veg noodles and curry fried rice and it was fantastic. Our table appreciated being able to just write down what we wanted instead of the potential for human error in ordering verbally. Nice atmosphere and the food was very affordable. Will be back here next time I'm in Melbourne.

Cheap place . Quick service with big portions. I've ordered many things in the past and love the wonton with chilli oil.
Fried dumplings r ok for the price but not that great. Rice dishes are great mostly but the presentation is not so appealing but tasty.

Wow! this is one of the best Chineese meals I have ever had. I took my two disabled clients here, and they were treated really well. Service was prompt, food was tasty, and prices were really reasonable. I will be back! :)

Food was incredibly tasty. Many choices in Chinatown for Christmas night. We choose this unassuming sit down restaurant with self-serve water and spicy sauces. I guess less service explains how we got huge dishes of very delicious food for a fraction of price we expected. Choices were

- E7 Shanghai steamed Xiao long bao. Tasty house specialty
- B8 sizzling beef with black pepper. House favorite and probably because it’s like a pound of beef incredibly good and I’m drinking the gravy with a spoon
- S35 hot and sour noodle soup with pork dumplings. Massive. Enough for a family. We are very full and Boyfriend refuses to leave any dumplings behind.

I adored the authentic ambience and food choices. If I lived next door I would order these three takeout then eat off them all week. Incredible value. Highly recommend.

The go-to when it comes to craving the finest Chinese (Shanghai) cuisine. You'll be welcomed with a bustling atmosphere and generally a long line of hungry patrons waiting for a table. Empress of China does BYO so that's definitely a plus as well. I encourage everyone to give this restaurant a go if you haven't already - you won't ever look back. Cheers.

It gets really packed over the weekend, but it's quick to get a table.

I came here on a trip to Melbourne 10 years ago and I've been thinking about it ever since, especially the wonton soup and shallot pancake. We fed 7 people for barely $100 and we still had plenty of food left over. Looking at the menu here, it's still exactly as I remembered it. I always tell my friends who go to Melbourne to eat here.
I will definitely be back next time I'm in town.

Update: I finally came back and everything was as I remembered, even the prices are still the same. I took my fiancé and he finally understood why I wouldn't stop talking about this place. So good we went there twice.

The food here was really good and affordable. Went here with my team for work and got plenty of food to share with a good variety. Would recommend making a booking for a table as like we did as there seemed to be a wait for people wanting a table. Overall really great food and would definitely go again.
