Great location to visit.
Did a self guided audio tour that can be completed with an app on your phone to do it at your own pace, so much to explore.
Went with a small child and there was enough to keep her entertained for the time we were there.
I would like to see in the future more stories of inmates and general history around on posters like in the chapel.
Ample bathroom facilities throughout, if you are sensitive to mould perhaps bring a mask as it is a little bit mouldy (to be expected in a 150 year old historical building)

Maitland gaol was a great experience with a great audio tour from your own mobile phone. I was able to stream this straight to my cochlear implants and also have the transcript to read as well for full accessibility. We’re looking forward to coming back when we can tour the towers.

Good old country jail, worth a weekend visit. I took the self guided audio tour, which took me around 2.5 hours to visit all the exhibit areas, listen to all the accompanying tracks and really immerse myself in the whole thing. The entire place is very well maintained and was not too crowded, though a pair of headphones is recommended. While there, I saw one of the guided tours where the tour guide was animatedly explaining the history behind one of the exhibits; I liked her passionate presentation and will definitely book myself in on one of those tours for the next visit. Parking was not an issue and the town itself had quite a few dining options, so overall it was a good day out for the family. The only thing that can be improved a bit is the map they provided for the self guided tour. Even though all the exhibit areas were well marked, following the route sequentially based on the map was pretty challenging, at least to me on my first visit.

Really nice full day experience with the opportunity to try different local breweries, wine options for those that don't like beer

Visited Maitland Gaol at around midday on a Sunday. Parking easily out the front. Self guided and guided tours also available. We decided on the self guided tour which was $19 for an adult. Estimated to take around 90 minutes (however it is at your own pace so you may be a little quicker or slower) it took us around 2 hours. There is a phone application you can download which gives you history and information on each point of interest with there being around 24 in total. Overall a great experience and definitely worthwhile making a trip for.

Absolutely lovely our guided tour. Our guide was very informative & interesting. As an ex prison guard here he certainly knew his stuff. I found his first hand stories intriguing. It wouldn’t have been the same if we just wandered around ourselves so was well worth paying abit extra for the guided tour. I spent yesterday evening googling some of the prisoners he mentioned. Thumbs up from us visiting Brits 👍

Fantastic experience and was a great morning out. We just did the self guided tour and enjoyed the observations and stories about previous employees. Very interesting history and easy to navigate. Highly recommend if you're in the area! Only suggestion I have for visitors is probably leave the younger kids at home! My older two (7 & 5) enjoyed it but the 3 year old got bored quickly.

A great experience for all the family. We had age range 5-60+ and all enjoyed themselves. Interesting, informative and eerie. Scan QR code at reception to access the audio tour to listen in your phone as you walk through the goal at your own pace. A good rainy day activity.

Fascinating and confronting - the prison is in an excellent state of preservation and the various eras are well represented in the surviving buildings. The stories from inmates and guards range from sad to spine chilling. An important relic of Australian history preserved for everyone to visit.

Absolutely loved the paranormal investigations they hold there, can’t wait to explore the other activities they hold. A massive thank you to Anne and the rest of her team for making me and my sisters feel comfortable amongst the whole tour!!!

I came here years ago to watch a prison movie in the exercise yard but only just recently did a self guided tour. It is done through an app which is easy to navigate, but make sure you bring some earphones. Not sure what those without a smart phone would use if they don't do a guided tour. I would love to go back to do a ghost/night tour. Very cold so make sure to rug up in winter.

My partner and I thoroughly enjoyed the ‘Crimes of Passion’ night tour. Our knowledgable and charismatic guide, Robyn and her storytelling ability made it an immersive and memorable experience. We’d recommend this tour and a visit to Maitland Gaol, and will be sure to return :)
