Dr. Michael Lutz-Orthopaedic Surgeon

My son as a 17 year had his ankle operated on for an os trigonum. He was playing a lot of sport at the time and a keen AFL player and very active. Dr Lutz was extremely thorough with the various treatment options and as he was in the middle of an AFL season got him in quickly and we made the decision to have surgery. This was only done after careful consideration and discussion as the best course of action. the surgery was successful and he has made a full recovery within the timeframes outlined by Doctor Lutz. I have referred another AFL player to him for a syndesmosis injury which was operated on and he went above and beyond in another successful operation with a full recovery. I have done a lot of research and am involved at QAFL level in QLD and when it comes to his area of expertise he is one of the best around in Brisbane.

Now that my treatment has concluded I thought I would take an opportunity to share my positive experience with Dr Lutz for a lisfranc fracture I suffered in mid-2019.

I know from past experiences in abusing my body that the nature of a lot of injuries generally (including mine) means they can require a little bit of wait-and-see from the initial consultation to ascertain their true extent, and I found it enormously reassuring that Dr Lutz had the experience and presence of mind to step back at the earlier appointments and assess all potential non-operative options before exposing patients to the risks of going under the knife.

Ultimately Dr Lutz recommended surgery as the appropriate option in my case, and that surgery was a fantastic success. However, I carried a lot of confidence into that decision from knowing that his practice involves a holistic approach by which surgery was only recommended if it was necessary and had been meaningfully considered against its alternatives.

Being a doctor of his caliber you obviously expect he will know his stuff (which he does) but his generosity of time, thoroughness in answering questions and articulating his care plan, and overall interest in his patients’ wellbeing all take things a step further and in my view lift him into the very top category of surgeons. In fact, my WorkCover claims officer told me she was so impressed by his work that she intended to refer a personal friend to see him - high praise indeed from someone whose job is to assess medical work.

I am deeply grateful for Dr Lutz’s guidance and care through a tough period, and for allowing me to leverage and benefit from his relationships with other great allied health providers.

I hope you don’t bust a lower limb, but if you do Dr Lutz is your guy.

My left foot (Toes) are all curled up I also have a big Bunion , I went to see Dr Lutz hoping to have him say he'd operate. Instead he said no that he won't do it, his reason was that because of my continuous health problems an operation could turn out to make matters worse. I appreciated his honesty, I wish he could have done it just so that I could wear some of my shoes that I have. I would and have recommended him to my friends

Dr Lutz did a subtalar fusion on my R ankle just over 3 years ago. As an active under 30 year old male at the time that news was devastating. Dr Lutz did an amazing job and I am extremely happy with the outcome and back doing the things I love. I couldn't thank him enough. Definitely, highly recommend.

Dr. Lutz operated on my (complete) torn Achilles around 4 years ago. Quite a rough recovery for this injury but he did an amazing job, no lingering pain, small scar, very efficient and effective! Highly recommend.

I would love to provide a full review of Dr Lutz and his abilities as a Surgeon but alas, I will never know. In December 2017 I asked my Doctor for a referral to a foot and ankle specialist (as an injury from when I was 19 was starting to impact my every day life). I was never able to speak to anyone in my lead up to my appointment but the prerecorded instructions told me to get X-Rays and I would have someone contact me if my issue required the Doctors attention. After a few weeks I was asked to get further X-Rays (load-bearing) and was advised I had an appointment late March 2018. A 3.5 month wait all told. On the day, I was advised the practice was running late and I was asked to attend 45 mins later than my scheduled appointment. I arrived at that time and waited another hour before I advised reception that I had to leave for another appointment. I was offered another 3.5 month wait, which I declined. I can't help feeling that in any other profession, this is not how you would treat your customers and I find it even more distressing that this is the result I would get from someone who is responsible for the care of others. My experience was cold and unfulfilling. I have asked my Doctor for another referral.

Well I am happy to say that this story has a happy ending! Dr Lutz’s office called me back shortly after my missed appointment and squeezed me in at 7am! I have changed my review to five stars for two reasons. I think sometimes things do just go wrong but in this case the response all around speaks volumes of Dr Lutz. His response to this message and his follow up to reschedule my appointment tell me I was wrong, he certainly does care about his patients. The second reason I changed this to five star was that he gave me great medical advice. I have had pain in my left foot for a few years now and expensive custom orthotics have not helped. Dr Lutz suggested a carbon insert into my shoe and it has been absolutely fantastic this week. Thank you Dr Lutz. Thank you.

Micheal Lutz was very informative and took the time to make sure I understood my options. He was not pushy in regards to having a surgery and found a way to help me even though my private cover declined my claim. Very happy with his service and highly reccomend his services

I cannot thank Dr Lutz enough for his above and beyond efforts in helping me with my Achilles. First real surgery for me and I cannot fault Dr Lutz in any area, from first consultation right up until the actual surgery.

Great surgeon, took his time to explain the extent of my injury, took into consideration my living needs and worked with them. For foot and ankle issues I wouldn't recommend anyone else.

Excellent Surgeon

Unfortunately, I can't leave a comprehensive review as my child was heartbreakingly knocked back by reception, because we don't have private hospital insurance.

I wanted to write this review, as the website does not make this clear that Dr Lutz will only consult with clients who have full private hospital health insurance.

I was referred to Dr Lutz. The office is difficult to contact as I was sent to voicemail during office hours and told by a recording that they would contact me.

25 days later i got a text message from their office and called in and for the first time a person answered eventually.

I was told that my case was not important and that maybe they could see me in 5 months and in the meantime… just don’t walk barefoot…. For 5 months.

I have a painful mystery lump that has appeared on one foot and is beginning to make all walking painful and is starting to affect my job.

I should not have to wait 6 months to be taken seriously by a doctor for what is an unknown foot problem.

I take my health seriously and so should you. This doctor’s office brushed me off as a patient, did not take my health seriously and was not helpful in solving my health problem. If they are not taking new patients they need to be open about this

I have received another referral. I intend to vigorously pursue answers and a proactive solution rather than being put in a 6 month Queue by Dr Lutz.

My experience with Dr Lutz has been a very bad one unfortunately and I have been deliberating as to whether I should share it. I have decided to comment because if I had my time over I definitely would not have proceeded with the operation on my left foot performed by Michael.
For approximately 4 years I had pain across the sole of my left foot. I tried many practitioners to no avail and so I contacted Michael to see if an operation would fix my problem. He informed me it would and so I proceeded with it.
Following surgery I followed all doctors instructions and after approximately 3 months my foot was more painful than before the operation.
I understand and can accept that not everything in life goes to plan however it is how a situation is dealt with in the event something does not go to plan that I am most disappointed in.
Firstly Dr Lutz congratulated himself on his operation being a “great success” followed by “you have developed another condition since the operation that is causing your pain” and “you will forget my name in 12 months time”. I am confident This was not the case.
The operation was over 2 years ago and the pain in my left foot is so severe I cannot run without severe pain. Every step I take walking is uncomfortable as is golf, tennis, snow skiing and most sports I have spent my life playing. I am a very active 70 year old and I live with this pain daily.
Michaels response to my situation was to refer me to another specialist and refuse to help with the cost of rectification.
Despite his assurance that I would forget his name a year after the operation, I remember his name daily and certainly not in a good way.
By the comments on other reviews I am sure Michael has helped many patients however when things go wrong he has shown that you are in your own.
If I had my time over I would have researched further as I have now done and not gone ahead with an operation.
