Sono Japanese Restaurant Portside Wharf

We booked dinner here because we had a taste for Japanese and the reviews were quite solid and their menus sounded delicious. We had an early seating so underground parking was very easy and complimentary for the first 2 hours (which corresponded to the length of our seating). The restaurant is very spacious and modern and has the look and feel of a true Japanese establishment. With this in mind, some of the seating areas may require you to take off your shoes, so try to avoid holey socks or smelly feet when you have your reservation! Our host seated us and is a short time, our waiter came over to explain the menu and the specials. He was very pleasant and helped us with deciding on our orders. We had a set menu and added a roll. Thankfully we didn't order anything else as we were just full enough so as not to have a food coma and experience discomfort all the way home. The ingredients were fresh and the plating were also pleasing to the eye. The flavor combinations were very tasty as well. There were a fair number of children in the restaurant for the 5:30 seating, and if that is not your scene, you may opt for a later seating. We are curious about the tappanyaki menu so we will definitely be heading back here in the future. The food is expensive, but the execution of the chef(s) was very good. There are more reasonable menu options available if needed.

Beautiful atmosphere with amazing staff, I can never get enough of the food. Always keen to return. Easily recommend the scallops and the salmon belly. The best scallops I've ever had in my life.

They never disappoint each time we visit. The service is always impeccably polite, the food is always fresh and well served. Flavours are always on point. Every dish served is delicious and we keep coming back because it’s worth it. I highly recommend everyone to visit Sono for special occasions or even just for dinner to spoil yourself. It’s a happy place. 🥰

Amazing experience on our anniversary. Staff did everything amazing, and the food is just amazing!! Always fresh and drinks were not too sweet, not too sour, but actually like legit perfect!!

This has to be one of the best fine dining Japanese restaurants in Brisbane.

The service was top notch, we were lucky to get the window side table with a water view. It was a weeknight and it was full, but they are very well run, our dishes only took a very short time to be served.

We ordered the tasting banquet and we got to taste so many different dishes, some of us were already full after the entree dishes 😅. However the Wagyu steal and the miso cod were not to be missed, so tender and flavoursome!

Overall very happy with our experience. Highly recommended.

We loved the food as always and came for a special occasion and as usual they didn’t disappoint. The food was simply amazing in their simplicity and the flavours were delightful. Couldn’t fault and will be back again. The stand out of the night was not the food but the amazing service especially from Mariko who did everything to make us comfortable and nothing was too difficult and she did it with such great attitude, smile and true joy. Went to Sono alone and enjoyed their course meal! Food was authentic and the place had a great atmosphere. Great place for families as well as date nights. Servers were really friendly, made my Brisbane trip worthwhile.

Sono is our favourite Japanese restaurant in Brisbane! We love it here!

Absolutely loved dining here. I came to sono to celebrate my graduation and we booked in a for the tatami private room and it was such a great decision. Unfortunately I do not remember the name of the server but she was wearing glasses and was super thorough explaining the dishes and what it contains as some of my family members had allergies, she also came in to check on us and made sure to go the extra mile to explain the best way to have certain dishes. All the other staff that tended to us were timely and were so kind as well. The food was so flavourful and soft, every dish was prepared beautifully and tasted authentic.

Absolutely amazing! 10/10. We will now be making this our yearly celebration place. Food was absolutely exquisite, staff - AMAZING! The way they describe every thing to you is great, never been so well looked after.

Our small work team enjoyed the professional service from when we entered the restaurant (none of us had been here before) until we departed. All staff are to be congratulated, service - food and ambiance was just outstanding!

This place is absolutely amazing, I could not fault it if I tried. The service was incredible and all the staff are very friendly, helpful and so knowledgeable. Solo table for 1 at Sono tonight - but it wasn’t just dinner, it was an experience! From the moment you step inside, to the moment you leave, the staff are very friendly and attentive.

I had the braised Wagyu beef ($39) and it just melts in your mouth. I also had 2 pieces of Aburi salmon belly ($14), and the crème brûlée with black sesame ice cream, and red bean ($18). A small bowl of rice was $4.

For me, the portion sizes were minuscule…but that’s probably because I’m a big eater!

Although I didn’t have a reservation, they were more than accommodating.

Absolutely amazing place to spend time. The atmosphere is slightly dark but warm in a way. The sunken tables into the floor are a great compromise for those not used to traditional Japanese seating. The food itself is second to none! Every single thing we had was made with so much love and care and whilst some may say that the presentation is over the top it really makes every dish special. We especially enjoyed the grilled eel and oysters with the raspberry sauce. We ordered desert and the staff placed chocolate “happy anniversary” signs on the food it was such a lovely touch. All the staff were so attentive to our food allergies too with nothing being too much trouble. Anything negative to say? Perhaps only one toilet stall in the male bathroom isn’t enough to accomodate all the potential male patrons. We will be going back at least once a year as it really is special.

That was amazing! The food was just outstanding, we ordered over $400+ of dishes and it was just absolutely amazing. I'm speechless. The staff were very polite and their service was excellent. I'll definitely be back for more.

I went to Sono Japanese Restaurant Portside many years ago for New Year's Eve. I returned yesterday for their Shabu-shabu with marbled A5 Japanese Wagyu beef. It was delicious and we also enjoyed a few plumb wines.
