Yesterday, My 86yr old mother, who lives with me, picked up her cordless TV listening device from the specialist at Bloom Hearing, Stocklands; Burleigh Heads; She was excited by the information supplied by the specialist at previous appointments attended, that the device will aid her ability to listen comfortably to TV.... Whilst setting up the system and reading the instruction booklet, I came across a WARNING! "The receiver generates stronger permanent magnetic fields that could cause interference with cardiac pacemakers and (ICDs)". I was stunned. My mother has a cardiac pacemaker, due to a chronic cardiac history. When I asked, my mum does not recall ever being asked for this information or advised of this fact by the Bloom specialists. She is disappointed her dreams of listening to and watching her favourite TV programs in comfort are now shattered but glad to be safe..
I am concerned by this development and the lack of duty of care by Bloom audiology specialists to my mum. I hope that sharing our experience with folk will inform and prevent any un-necessary suffering and/or adverse medical reactions to the vulnerable in the future.
