Excellent food, friendly and accommodating staff.
Good size meals, ice cream in the frozen orange was the highlight of the evening.
Steaks were delicious as well. Only issue I had was the price of added on sauces, not enough to drop the score by full star

We stayed at Mount Gambier for a night and came here for dinner and tried the eye fillet. Absolutely amazing! Would recommend it to go with the mushroom and bacon sauce. Perfect for couple or family to have dinner there. Love the interior set up as well. Booking does need to be made prior to coming to the restaurant.

Returning to The Barn for the second time in consecutive years. The standard of good remains high as usual. No need to dig deep into the pocket for the Wagyu beef, the normal 400g porterhouse steak cooked to the perfection only for $49. You get a superb quality of food for the price of a pub. Looking for many happy returns.

You are only as good as your last meal?
I talk this place up all the time and have never had a bad steak here until the last visit HOWEVER only one (of seven) of the steak orders came out over cooked. We didn’t make a fuss, and to their credit they did ask about it.

This is probably more a testament to how good this place is than a complaint. I always expect the best from them because it has always been the best previously.

I love their steaks, and the sides that come with it but equally impressive is their well balanced and curated wine cellar and their extremely reasonable prices. They are a champion of local wines (SA in general) but do have other new and old world wines. It’s ever changing, and if you’re lucky you’ll score a rare unicorn at very fair prices. Case in point the Sami ODI little 9 we enjoyed that night for $150

Amazing restaurant! Food and service were both faultless. It's by no means cheap, but you get what you pay for...the steak was one of the best I have had. Worth every cent.

My partner and I went to the steakhouse tonight as we are staying at the barn for accommodation already. We tried the Soy And Star Anise Braised Duck for entree, 400g of aged grass fed porterhouse for the main, baileys crème brulee for dessert. The food was fantastic from start to finish and the serving time was appropriate, not long wait. Also they have an extensive wine selection for wine lovers.

During a recent trip to Mt Gambier, we went out to The Barn, as a group of 9. The table we were taken to was well lit and spacious. The wait for the food took a fairly long time but I'm not surprised, as we ordered a lot. I myself had the 1KG New York Porterhouse steak and I could only finish it with the help of the rest of the table.
Waiting staff was courteous and professional, which only added to the experience.

I would however suggest that you come if you're celebrating a special event (Like a Jubilee celebration), as the prices can be seen as prohibited to some (the 1kg Porterhouse was close to $100, but it was done to perfection so it gets a passing grade in that regard). Having said that, come at least once, you will not be disappointed.

A long-time gem of the Limestone Coast.

The menu is obviously cantered around local steak & the quality is excellent. The 26 page wine list is jaw dropping - one of Regional SA’s best. Plenty of local & international representation of many varieties & styles, from allocation-only cult producers to classics, to exciting young producers with plenty of museum options aswell.

Beautifully kept & luscious gardens. The rooms are modern, spacious & tranquil. Will absolutely be back.

When you say "I'm visiting Mount Gambier" and 4 people in a row tell you that you MUST visit The Barn, you must visit.

I'm so glad that I heeded their advice and it was a night to remember. Service felt like a fine dining restaurant with a Michelin star but without the Michelin price point. Steak was done to perfection and appetisers and desserts were also very tasty.

A slight downer was the waitress who served our dessert as she seemed really sulky when she brought us our dessert, plonked it down and walked away without any smiles or saying anything else. However, I am not letting this affect my rating. They deserve the full 5 stars still.

Had the 600g porterhouse steak. It was cooked medium rare and served with a salad. I opted out of fries because I don’t like fries. Great atmosphere and beats most other places with quality. Must have been great with wine, which I couldn’t have due to long drive.

I guess steak prices are okay for size; but sauce came at an extra $5, which I wasn’t told or I didn’t care to listen as that has never been the case. It didn’t feel right for my wife’s 400g steak where sauce was just poured on top. But I got a small sauce pot.

Staff were friendly and welcoming. Has to be a must see place for a foodie.

Keen to try again!

Ooo boi, the food is amazing. Initially they served me a 600g porterhouse steak ($69.00) maybe too raw.. not my taste but they took and cooked it to perfection. I can't complain. They listened and done their deed. A must try, for their service and food. The waiter and waitress are professional and they take your orders seriously unless you are trying to be a "Karen"

Had a great evening! Kicked back with a few cocktails in the piano bar before heading into the restaurant for sensational steaks. The entrees were quite average, but the steaks were truly superb. Their chocolate pudding in a mug is absolutely delish. We were initially going to share, ended up ordering a serve for each. Enjoyed a tour of their wine cellar and was fascinating to see a wonderful collection of wines from all over the globe, they even had a Zinfandel, which was a great match to our steaks. To sum it up … good ambience, great service, fantastic steaks, splendid wine and perfect pudding.

Best porterhouse steak I have ever eaten in my 52 years of life. Melted in my mouth. Dessert was delicious too. Such warm and friendly staff and homely ambience. Certainly the place to be! Can’t wait to come back and try all the other steaks!

This is our second time eating at the Barn Steakhouse. And it was just as good as the first.
Both my bf and I got the Duck for entree, we both got it the first time we came and have been dreaming about it ever since. And the chef delivered. The meat just fell off the bone. The flavours of this plate are simple and recognisable but yet complex and mind blowing and palette pleasing. The duck will be our forever choice for the entire.

Now this personally on behalf of both of us is not a complaint at all, while we both happy with the fact that as soon as we were finished our entrees that our mains arrived but we both felt it was slightly rushed as the waitress had nowhere to put our mains as our finished entree plate were still on the table. And with the awkward swap of our plates we were left with out forks for our main meal, which again wasn’t a big deal as we were easily able to get the attention of a waiter who was more than happy to help.

I got the 400g porterhouse steak and the bf got the filet Mignon. We both very much enjoyed our steak. But because of the lack of forks we found that the slight wait time that our baked potatoes had cooled down a bit. But again still delicious and we were both very happy.

For dessert we got the special, which was a deconstructed mango cheesecake. We both very much enjoyed. And the flavours and textures complemented each other perfectly.

I got a French martini, which was topped with freeze dried strawberries. This cocktail was smooth and well balanced. Even the bf who doesn’t drink much had a sip and enjoyed it.

The customer service we received was wonderful, we were greeted upon arrival and shown to our table with little wait. Through out our dinner we were met with friendly staff and good customer service.
This is one our favourite restaurants in SA and we will be back again.

The best steak in town. It's a formal dining restaurant and a bit expensive but worth to spend. Service were good and lovely staff.

The only down time was if they will explain the ordering with drinks and foods, that it will be a different person. As what we experienced, a lady took our order for a wine and advised "oh it s not me wo will take your meal order". A proper way of welcoming the guest and explaining.

Other than that- highly recommended!!

Expensive, BUT honestly the best steak I have ever had, the staff were extremely kind to me and my partner, they helped make the Barn inviting, which added to the all around great experience.
Deffinetly a place to take your partner if they're a steak lover.

Incredible meals - from the scallop/prosciutto entree, to a perfectly cooked 250g eye fillet (pic doesn’t do justice) and ending with a delightful sticky date pudding- this entire experience was absolutely 5/5! Partner had the 400g rump with peppercorn sauce and absolutely loved it.
Service also great, very attentive and lovely!

Tasty food, good serving portion We got wagyu tataki, oysters, porterhouse steak, chicken, eton mess and creme brulee. Decent menu and wine selections. Intimate atmosphere. Quite a bit of tourist the night we went there, but still ok. We stay a night at their accomodation as well, it has a nice garden view.
