Came for new year’s eve dinner. It’s a little family restaurant (half French half Vietnamese) where mom cooks based on grandma’s recipes. Dad is a lovely French guy who welcomes all the guests in a super friendly way. The flavours these people create are of a very high level. I’ve been to Michelin starred places who didn’t bring this level of quality and skill. Very impressive and wonderful value for money. And that black sesame ice cream at the end was just incredible. Definitely a must visit when you’re in Hanoi!

Delicious selection of authentic Vietnamese dishes. The Phở Bò was outstanding and the nems and rice spring roll platter was simply a treat. Had also a green tea cake and green tea ice cream as a dessert which was so yummy.

If this place doesn’t end up on 50 Best in the near future I’d be shocked. A beautiful courtyard style restaurant in the old quarter in a beautifully refurbished building, the restaurant is a bastion of calm from the craziness of the streets. Elevated street food with lots of passion is on the menu. It’s a family run establishment, but serves food any top cosmopolitan city restaurant would be proud to put on the table. The pho was 100% the best I’ve had in all of Vietnam (and I ate a LOT) and the shrimp and mango spring rolls are an absolute delight. Beautiful textures and flavors, and served with a personal touch.

Went to have dinner tonight and the experience was great. The Restaurant is clean with nice ambient and food was delicious. You must try the Salad Pomelo Prawn, Deep Fried Shrimps, Crab and Halong Curry, Madam Hien Rice and also the Green Tea Cake dessert😋😋. We truly enjoyed our dinner and hope to visit again next time.

Highly recommend eating here. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The duck 3 ways was very special. The staff couldn’t have done more to help. We loved meeting the founders grandson and hearing about the significance of the dishes. The courtyard setting is also lovely.

Discovered a hidden gem in the middle of Hang Be. Occupying the former premises of the Green Tangerine, the almost centenary building is well preserved and maintained. Madam Hien restaurant serves up interesting dishes with a modern twist. We had the pomelo with prawns salad, soft shell crab rolls with tamarind sauce, caramelised pork belly and the duck three ways, all of which were delicious. Drinks were 1-for-1 during happy hour 1700-1800hrs. The service was great and the staff were attentive, led by the granddaughter of Madam Hien. Highly recommended and will visit again.

This is THE place to take your friends to have a lovely vietnamese food tour, authentic and also creative! The outside table with Hanoi’s weather in the old town makes it even more special! All the little things like the art of table, the way of presenting foods and the decorations in small details shows how the chef loves and knows vietnamese culture. And of course the food is wonderful!

I’m a chef with 4 restaurants, this place is 5/5 stars, great place to try many real vietnamese food in small portions. Authentic, great branding of traditional vietnamese Hoi An architecture, what an art! Sublime, bravo 🙌

The location has slightly changed, still easily findable.

First, i made a mistake when ordering i should have paid more attention to the menu, but in my defense it also looks the same and the text is very small and the location is quite dark. So i ended up with two starters instead of a starter and a main meal.

The food was good especially the one with mushrooms, the springrolls were very avrage however and not worth the prive for sure.

The personell is very nice and speaks perfect english even without kuch noticable accent.

The ambience is actually one of the nicer places you will find in old town.

All in all probably worth the higer pricepoint. I wish the menu was better readable

One of the best pho bo I've ever had. Great wine selection from French owner. High end service & central old town location. Quiet for 9pm on a Saturday but nice and chilled for the season I imagine.

. Thanks

It’s a wonderful place with a decent variety of food to try, even if you’re a picky eater like myself. If you’re someone who enjoys eating within an area that’s a combination of both traditional and modern, I highly recommend this restaurant:)

Most authentic and delicious restaurant in Hanoi! We have spent 3 days in Hanoi during our Vietnam trip and stumbled on this amazing restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious (especially the spring rolls, pho and fried rice) and the best we had in town (and we tried most of the best rated spots). The prices are a little higher than in the surrounding restaurants, but the higher prices are worth it given the superior food quality and taste. The restaurant itself has a lovely atmosphere and provides an oasis of calm in a busy and noisy city.

So happy to find the hidden gem in the old quarter. When you’re looking for a more elevated experience than street food but nothing too stuffy Madam Hien hits the spot.
The restaurant has recently reopened in a new location but the experience still has the strong family vibe which made it an institution. We were served by both the chef & founder, and his son who is knowledgeable of both the food and wine list. You could feel the love and passion they both have for the food they’re sharing. The subtle blending of Vietnamese recipes with French techniques was exactly what we were craving - we loved each dish! The service was excellent too. Highly recommended.

Madame Hien comes highly recommended by locals and tourists alike! And with good reason! The fact that the place is always packed and it is really difficult to get a table unless you make a reservation, really says a lot about Madame Hien!

Ambiance of the interiors gives you that classic French feel with Vietnamese hues. The menu thrives with local specialities that come in small servings; but prepared with excellent quality. Once the food arrived at our table, we just devoured everything to bits. The food was that good. Try everything from the duck to the squid to the pork and others, you can’t go wrong with your selections.

Service crew was very attentive throughout the meal period. And were very much friendly.
