C.P. Johnson Lumber

I drove over an hour from Arlington to this business and it was definitely worth the trip! I am brand new to woodworking and this was my first experience buying lumber outside of a big box store. The staff are very friendly and helpful. They gave me space to look through their inventory but were also readily available to answer all of my questions. They have an amazing supply of beautiful lumber at really affordable prices. I am very happy with the pieces I brought home and I would recommend them to anyone.

I have been going to this place for years now and started at this lumberyard. I have been to quite a lot of lumberyards since and this one is still unmatched in terms of quality and price. Although other lumberyards might have cheaper wood, the content of heartwood to sapwood would be unmatched. Also, Chris makes sure the Kiln drying process is thorough which if it is not, your wood can have major twists and turns in it. I know he has stringent guidelines for what he puts on his shelf. The walnut he has is unmatched to other places.

I have been buying lumber here for years and must say the experience of walking through the building is nothing short of magical. My daughter is also a woodworker and her eyes light up when I mention going to C.P. Johnson. Yesterday was no exception to the positive experiences we've had over the years. Chuck helped me and he is such a nice guy with a wealth of knowledge about the different wood species. These guys are so helpful if you need it but also allow you the latitude to shop at your leisure. I always leave there feeling better than when I arrived. Great job Chris and Chuck!

Great experience getting maple for a large table build. Super friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, and GREAT selection of North American hard and soft woods and decent selection of the more common exotics. They beat my previous supplier's price on Sapele by a BUNCH.

Feb 2022 Update: Just finished these midcentury modern bedside tables using Chris's rustic walnut. for those of you who appreciate seeing all the grain and color variation in walnut, always ask for un-steamed walnut (in this case, that's all Chris sells)

I went here today and was helped by Chuck. He's awesome!!
I know nothing about wood, never used a saw, but know what looks good.
He explained so many different types of wood and what it'll look like when finished. Not a cared of hard work. Offered to take down a ton of wood stacked on top of what I wanted to look at.
He's going to cut and mill my board. I'll go home and cut it to size and throw it up on the wall for solid wood floating shelves. This is a great place to visit if you feel intimated with the whole process of buying wood.
I picked up Sapele wood that is Flippin beautiful.

This is the only place in the DMV I go for hardwood lumber and Baltic Ply. Chris has a great selection that is well organized and easy to pick from. I contend he has the clearest and highest quality walnut in the US. Stop reading reviews and head on over!

Great selection of just about any wood you could possibly want. Very good prices. As others have said, excellent customer service. Chris is friendly and helpful, even if you don't know much about wood and are still learning. He'll let you browse and check through all the boards to find one you want without pestering you like an overeager car salesman, but is ready to help if you have questions or want advice. If you're within driving distance, this is definitely the place to go.

Chris has really updated his warehouse and inventory since my last visit, to include a nice selection of exotic woods. Plenty of domestic hardwoods as well. Fantastic selection and quality - prices are fair. Boards on the racks are all good quality, and "seconds" are put in the bargain bin and are priced on-board (as opposed to by the board foot). Warehouse is kept clean and neat. Highly recommended for the home based as well as professional woodworkers.

I visited this place today. I had a wonderful experience. The owner, and his right hand man, were both extremely attentive to my needs. Their inventory and their prices are very competitive. I doubt you can find a better place to meet your hardwood lumber needs. It was only a 54 minute drive from the Tyson's Corner area (corner of Rt 7 and Rt 495), well worth the extra distance

New to woodworking and first time to buy lumber anywhere but a big box store. Great prices and service. Thankfully they were willing to help the new guy pick out lumber and provided plenty of pointer. Will definitely be back.

First thing...the indoor yard is clean, well organized, and the quality of the lumber is absolutely fantastic. They have a huge selection of standard hardwoods as well as exotics and in varying, lengths, widths, and thickness. Chris was extremely kind, professional, and most importantly helpful. This is my new source for lumber. Go check them out, you won’t be disappointed. Best prices I’ve seen in this area.

For the highest quality lumber (domestic and exotic), priced competitively, there is no better place than CP Johnson! They are a local business for me, and after looking around, I feel fortunate to have found it. It's not a stretch to say it would be worth a multiple hour trip if necessary to get this kind of material.

Chris is able to accommodate huge orders for professionals, or small orders for weekend hobbyist. Even if you have never been to a lumberyard, his customer service is welcoming and informative.

I recently got into woodworking (which is a euphemism for "I am a rank amateur") and I needed to pick up some wood for a project. I heard through the grapevine that C. P. Johnson was worth the drive (about an hour one way for me), so I headed out there to see what they had. They were awesome. They had a great selection of hardwoods at good prices. I let them know that I was pretty new at this, and they were extremely helpful. They made sure I understood how board-feet work, explained how the store was organized, and made a few recommendations about what might work best for my project. Then they let me browse at my own pace and pick out what I needed. (Honestly, that was a smart move since I made some impulse purchases that I probably wouldn't have if I'd felt rushed.) From start to finish, I had a great experience. I would (and will) recommend C. P. Johnson to anyone who asks.

Beautiful wood and great personal service without pressure. Chris and Robert are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I learn something new about wood every time I visit, and the prices are as good as you can find. I'm excited about the upcoming expansion into exotics and high grade plywoods. It's well worth the 2.5 hour drive from home!

Special thanks to Chuck! He was awesome and made the process of looking for our fireplace mantle very seamless. Settled with a beautiful 10' x 12" x 3" cherry wood that he also helped get into the vehicle. The whole transaction of choosing the wood, cutting it, and placing it in the vehicle took less than 30 minutes! We couldn’t be happier! Highly recommend!
