Standard & Strange

I am a reluctant shopper, and I quickly become overwhelmed when walking into a store, particularly one that tends to have well informed customers. Standard & Strange would have overwhelmed me if not for the excellent service I received.

I walked in and started to try and understand how the jeans were organized. I did this while also trying to avoid talking to anyone, because I don't necessarily know what I'm talking about, and don't want to feel dumb.

After I felt I had an understanding of how things were organized, I turned and asked the person working there for confirmation. I then went to ask if there was a general order so I can look at my size - He then asked, "Do you know what you're looking for? I can help you." If you were to have started the clock at this point, I walked out of there with a pair of jeans in 5 minutes from that question - including trying on the pair, and nailing it on the first try.

I gave a general description, referencing some Levi's pairs I have had and liked and disliked. Gen grabbed a pair off the rack, as I was looking at it he asked my size and went to find it in the shelves.
It was a really great experience, and one I would typically not have as I would have simply walked out. Gen was extremely helpful while also giving me my space to explore on my own.

I bought my first engineer boots here. A really expensive purchase for me and Eden (guy working here) and the other dude working were super helpful in helping me figure out sizing. I probably spent over an hour here trying on boots for the proper size. They made me feel welcomed at the shop and never rushed me. I even forgot my ID and they ran out and chased me down to give it to me. Great shop and customer service

I love coming here. It’s a small store but densely packed with great gear that’s not just fashion but timeless clothing. From selvedge denim, navy deck jackets, military repro designs, to flannels, there is always something interesting. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Eden-Marcel is very friendly also. Products are high quality from independent designers, mostly from Japan, so they can last a lifetime. It’s also really cool that S&S has exclusive collab pieces as well like a dark brownish black sawtooth western shirt it did with Indi+Ash brand that I love to wear.

What a sweet place to get fitted for long lasting brands. Knowledgeable and interested staff made sure I had everything I could ask for, while steering me away from items that simply didn't fit. The owners are always ready to give the most to getting me what I want. I will continue to be a repeat customer.

This place is dope. I came here looking to buy my first pair of selvedge jeans. Gen was awesome and helped me find the perfect fit. Hemming was extremely fast too. I’m so glad I came into the store because I never would’ve found the right cut and size for myself online. Love my new jeans!

Fantastic store, they have the clothes I want to wear. They get things to me fast, despite being in Canada and them being down in Oakland. The staff are exceptional, especially Mari. They took the time to wish me happy birthday and include a small gift on top of my most recent order. They're an exceptional operation, from too to bottom. Highly highly recommend.

I ordered a pair of boots online from S&S. Start to finish, their customer service was outstanding: from the detailed product description and sizing information to their quick shipping. Neil and the guys are prompt and personable communicators as well, making the entire experience very pleasant. Thanks so much! It's so refreshing to work with businesses that are as equally concerned about their service as they are about the quality of their goods.

Wow!!! I don’t even know quite where to begin here.
This was, far and away, the best customer service experience for me. I was placing a special order on some items from Japan and a phone call was made to me in order to explain more about the products and process. You really get what you pay for and can feel really good about supporting a very fine small business.

I wasn’t able to leave a second review so here is an update for 12/1/2017.
Since my first experience with Standard and Strange was so pleasant, I decided to place a special order for some clothing items from The Real McCoys in Japan.
S&S is the only retailer within the US that has the ability to stock and order goods from RMC.
Special ordering can be a tricky process but much care was given to make sure that we were ordering the correct sizes.
The entire process was seamless and all of my items were delivered to me in less than 2 weeks which is quite remarkable.
All of the items received were of the best quality and craftsmanship and I felt that I received an outstanding value for my investment. The leather goods from RMC are particularly good with their jackets and boots being among the best anywhere worldwide.
The owners and staff are interested in how the items you purchase are working out, long after the sale transaction is over.
Thanks to Neil, Mari, and Brandon for all the impeccable customer service you provided to me.

I will be returning in short order, to S&S, when I feel the need for additional high quality menswear items!!!

Great store, even better people. I’ve purchased a small handful of items from S&S over the past few years and love interacting with Jeremy, Neil, Elliot, and the rest of the S&S gang along the way. They offer some of the best menswear clothing, shoes, and trinkets on the market from a bunch of top notch brands. If you’re ever in Oakland (or have the internet), pay them a well-earned visit. 👍🏻

Neil and his team are on top of their things. Beside the best possible lines of denim and other gears for gents, they offer one of the greatest- if not the best!- customer experience online. I had a couple of special orders with S&S, and everything went smoothly. Highly recommended.

If you are looking for high quality, hard to find casual clothing, then this is the place to go. I recently visited Tokyo for the first time and wanted to shop for a pair of Japanese jeans,. Because it was a work trip, I could not find the time to make it happen. When I came home to the Bay Area, I stumbled upon S&S... Boy am I glad I did. They have a nice collection of quality clothing and brand names that are at the top of their game. The staff is super helpful and I am now the proud owner of 2 pair of jeans and a single t-shirt. While this may seem like a modest list, they are high quality and fit really well. if you have the time and budget, I would definitely recommend S&S..

They have a really nice and consistent selection of very different brands with which they cultivate a healthy commercial relationship with. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful and they won't oversell. They give honest opinions and really know their stuff. It's a mandatory stop is you are into heritage stuff, or union made and ethically sourced finely crafted clothes at fair prices.

Always a treat to come in here. Whenever I'm in the Oakland area I always try to stop by and its always a great experience. The quality and the care put into the garments in the shop are greatly appreciated as well the knowledgeable and passionate staff. I usually pick up a couple or few items at a time, but I am totally looking forward to coming in and really splurging at some point. The feeling you got as a kid in a candy store...yeah, this is that place lol. Thank you Standard & Strange staff hope you're all doing well amongst the pandemic. Purchased the Joe Mccoy ball park thermal and rototo socks this time around and the quality and fit of both are impeccable, I need to come back and buy at least 5 more of these thermals LOL :)

This is not only a shop for cool stuffs you could ever find on earth only but this a place operated by a group of GOOD people. I meant they are really good literally, I love what they do and their values.
Outstanding service mind, I'm already their lifetime customer for sure.

If you're in the Oakland area and you want the best pair of jeans you can buy then you owe it to yourself to check these guys out. Awesome customer service and a great selection of brands. It's not cheap, but that's what you get when you pay for stuff that wasn't made in a sweatshop.

Exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff. They were able to take my limited list of preferences and select from their vast inventory a few selections that were all dead on and had me pondering for a while which I would choose. Ended up leaving with a fantastic pair of jeans that fit, feel, and priced just right.

Outstanding men’s clothing shop. Been coming here since they were in the alley. Timeless fashion made of quality materials. The items in this store are not inexpensive however if well cared for will last decades due to the quality of the materials.

I’ve done 6-7 mail orders with Gen and the others here. They’re the toppest. I have acquired some fine things with excellent customer support. Love....John Lofgren boots and Freenote shirts among others. Someday, I’ll get to stop in the store and hang with the staff while continuing to stress test my credit limit. Highly recommended.

Yo, talk about exception customer service! I spent all morning looking for a par of RW 9874 / Klondike in size 8. By the time I woke up everyone had sold out. S&S went completely out of their way to make the purchase happen. They literally spent an hour moving around parts to confirm and overnight shipment to me so I can rock these on my vacation. Yo dudes, you ROCK! Nothing like excellent customer service especially in the 21st century. Cheers to you, Neil! Rock on!

One of the best premium denim stores in the US. Their selection of Real McCoy's, Ooe Yofukuten, Kapital is impressive and mixed with many of the finest Japanese, American and European brands. They also offer in-house hemming and handle full denim repairs and tailoring.
