Dr. Spencer Miller's Piano Lessons

Hands down the best! I have 3 children taking lessons from Spencer! They all love it and are constantly asking when the next one is. Spencer doesn’t just teach an instrument (though he is an expert in many), instead he teaches music! He incorporates drums, rhythm and even popular songs that are of interest to his students. My daughter had taken guitar lessons elsewhere for years and was quickly losing interest and wanting to quit. We let Spencer have a try with her and by the end of the first lesson she was smiling from ear to ear because he asked her what she wanted to learn. By the end of the lesson she was playing an Olivia Rodrigo song which apparently is a big deal for an 11-year-old. Spencer has a way of making learning music fun, exciting, and very doable. He gives his students the confidence to know that they are capable. I simply cannot say enough great things… if you are considering learning music stop looking and reach out to Spencer!

Spencer has been the best thing that has ever happened to our family in terms of music. We had tried out other piano teachers and schools and found their approach to instruction rigid and limiting. With Spencer, my daughter has learned lifelong skills such as ear training and teaching herself to play songs that she loves, without relying on written music. This allows her to follow her own passion, and keeps her motivated to learn and practice more. Besides that, he sees the very best in her and provides guidance and opportunities for reaching her performance goals, such as arranging for live jam sessions. There is no better teacher for my daughter and for any student who wants to learn while living the experience.

Spencer is an amazing piano teacher! Spencer is very bright, fun, and creative. He is friendly and thoughtful and connects well with people, offering students steady encouragement to boost self confidence. Spencer has played an important role in our child's discovery of loving music and performance. His focus on teaching improv with his students adds spice and adventure experience.

I have nothing but good things to say about Spencer's teaching! He is very skilled at tailoring his instruction to my specific needs and particular music interests. His knowledge of the different musical genres is incredible, and he is great at explaining complex ideas in a way that can be readily understood. I am learning more about music theory and how to practice than I expected, and that's made playing the piano incredibly fun and rewarding for me. I am incredibly grateful to be his student.

Spencer is one of the best piano teachers I’ve ever encountered. He is so patient but still knows how to get so much out of his students. He is also really fun and great with kids of all ages! Highly recommend!

Our teenage son has been taking piano lessons from Spencer for about 3 years now. We feel very lucky to have found Spencer and see him as both a gifted teacher and skilled mentor. Our son already had some exposure to reading music due to being involved in grade school and middle school band from an early age – but when it came to studying the piano, he wasn’t particularly interested in deepening either his music reading skills or practicing lots of dexterity drills. What he really wanted was better understanding of theory, composition, and improvisation. We let Spencer know this from the get-go – he took the ball and ran with it, making all these things accessible and realizable. In addition to this, he has put a lot of emphasis on ear training. It’s been rewarding to see our son’s knowledge and capability grow, and to watch his interest in music deepen. Spencer encourages our son to bring his own musical interests to the table, enhancing his understanding of arrangements, chord progressions, etc. And sometimes Spencer will bring in a bit of unplanned activity (for example, conducting one recent lesson using fun synthesizer sounds rather than piano). He is consistently encouraging and fosters a constructive, positive learning environment. I’m confident my son will have a lifelong interest in music, and part of that interest will be informed by virtue of the things he’s come to understand via Spencer’s guidance and instruction.

I love Spencer's approach to teaching piano! He has a strong jazz background which helps fuel creative exercises beyond just teaching books and sight-reading. He truly wants students to find their voices and expression with the instrument, which... for me, is the foundation of building a long-term relationship to play music. That said, he also does a great job of keeping our son focused and always expanding his skills. Can't say more about how great he is!

Spencer is the best piano teacher I’ve ever had. Not only does he teach music theory, but he allows you to find ways to explore all musical passions and include them in your lessons. I’ve learned to enjoy lessons instead of dreading them, and it is all due to Spencer.

Dr. Spencer was my children’s first piano instructor. I was amazed at how quickly both my children were able to learn and thrive under Dr. Spencer’s thoughtful teachings! He also is super flexible and instilled a love of improv that my children exhibit in their love for piano to this day! Spencer is a great teacher. I appreciate the flexibility that he is with time and days. I appreciate the time and the effort that he put it to teach my son by online and in-person. Special when was covid. I am happy that my son is taking class with Spencer. He have learned a lot and loves playing his piano and always is excited for his next lesson.

Spencer has 20+ years of experience being a musician. He has studied, learned, practiced, and now teaches. An incredible performer and perhaps an even better instructor with patience most people do not have, you can guarantee lessons with Spencer have great odds of becoming a successful musician in whatever way you wish to be. Great teacher! Spencer combines infectious enthusiasm for music with practical advice for learning skills and music theory. I’ve enjoyed getting to improvise during his lessons and can notice my playing improving over time.

Spencer's ability to not only have a doctorate level of understanding of the music he plays, but also be able to translate that to the elementary level for an inexperienced learner such as myself, has been consistently showcased for over 15 years.
