This was a surprise!! Completely stumbled across this tunnel. My son and I were in the area and saw this tunnel. Before we went we went and bought headlamps which is 100% necessary. He and I were the only ones in this tunnel for the first two hrs.
If you're in the area 100% definitely visit!

Great little hike!
Highly recommend a bright flashlight or headlamp in order to make it through the tunnel.
There are 2 parking lots; the west is flat terrain whereas the other parking wouldn’t be considered accessible.

Absolutely amazing hiking trail, plus a really fun walk through the tunnel!

It is an almost 1 mile decline on a rocky path and then incline return. The bottom of the trail meets you with a blast of cool air from the tunnel and if you are having beautiful light on a summer day you may get a gorgeous hazy light to filter through its entrance. Enter on the West side where we did if possible.

We stayed in Afton, Virginia for a weekend getaway. This trail was close by, and we had looked at reviews for the trail before attempting it. I will say the reviews are spot on. It was a short drive the Afton (East Trailhead) entrance. At the entrance, there's a gravel lot with a couple portable toilets. You walk about a 1/2 mile, relatively level, to get the tunnel entrance. Once you enter the tunnel, it is completely dark and about a mile walk, so you definitely need a flashlight (or two). You can continue the trail after the tunnel on the Waynesboro side for about a 4.5 mile walk /hike, but we decided to head back after the 1.5 mile marker. Overall, it was a beautiful trail that is easily walkable.

Most amazing tunnel walk. Make sure you have a strong flashlight. Don’t rely on your iPhone or smartphone flashlight. Have something stronger. We didn’t see any bats or frogs. But it was a good experience.

This was a unique experience throug history. Short sign postage of how the tunnel was created. Mile long tunnel through Afton mountain. Take a flash light, tunnel is dark and you will want to feel safe and look around. The tunnel is 50 degrees, prepare if you get cold. Plan for at least 45 minutes to an hour. Footing is a bit uneven in place but easily navigated.

It's a really breath taking trail, literally, lol, if you haven't hike in a while like me.
Worth to do it. It's an easy and fun hike. Specially in the fall, 200% recommended. Small hills from the west lot, so you will get a good cardio. Bring your dog, friends and the family! Take your time admiring the mother nature! In my opinion fall is a good season for this hike, the breeze is pleasant 😌 you wont feel suffocated. The temperature while walking inside the tunel it's a little chill however, believe me it's enjoyable.
Don't forget the flashlight, bright light will be best. The cellphone is not enough. Enjoy #lifeisgood #roadtrip #mothernature

Such a neat little trail. Start at the east and you get to the tunnel quicker, and make sure to bring flashlights! I would say read the info on the trailheads and enjoy. Quite a neat piece of history.

Interesting history. Approximately half mile to the tunnel and 3/4 mile through. Make sure you have a good flashlight. Lots of people on this easy trail including families, stroller, bicycles and walkers. Temperature drops in the tunnel. I bet it would be great in the hot summer months. Plaquards along the way telling about its history. Nicely Done!

Truly a unique hiking experience! The trail is super easy and the tunnel is surreal - once the longest tunnel in North America, now with water leaking from the ceiling and gushing from a wall it seems the pperfect spot for a horror story...

There are two kinds of people: one who gets shirt to get wet and a bright flashlight, and the other not afraid of getting wet and the dark. It is THE experience. Pick a bit of a rainy day and go there. Get a small flashlight just so you won’t bump into walls. If moment is right you won’t be able to see further than your own hand. Your chance to become blind to open your mind.
Middle way when there is no any other light - turn your flashlight off. Feel yourself. Express yourself. Sing. Cry. Acoustic allows it and makes it double. Enjoy yourself.
Virginia is for lovers.

Excellent hike! Parking is better from the East Trailhead. I parked at the West Trailhead. Hiking from the west is steeper and longer to the tunnel entrance than from the east. Makes a difference on a hot day! The temperature drop is more noticeable from the east.

This is an awesome easy hike on wide gravel covered trails. The tunnel itself is a cool breeze. Inside. The brickwork and bare rock are fascinating and historically fun. Overall very nice place to get a good cardio walk in.

Eastern side is a much shorter as well as flat walk to the tunnel. The Western side (Waynesboro) is quite hilly and may be difficult for some walkers.

We began at the Western trail head in Waynesboro. We went at 2 PM on a Wed. It wasn’t busy, just a few people here and there. There is dedicated parking, but it is limited. Portable potties located at parking area. The hike to and from the tunnel on the West end does have a lot of elevation variation. This part of the hike is moderate with a good amount of uphill climbing from the tunnel back to your vehicle. You can feel the temperature drop as you get close to the entrance. At least a 20 degree difference in the tunnel, so you may want to bring a jacket or sweatshirt. The path is very well maintained, wide with crushed asphalt/gravel. Bring a headlamp or flashlight with you! The nearly 1 mile walk through the tunnel is smooth and easy. It was a dry day when we went with not much recent rain, and there were a few spots with some dripping water from above and water to the sides of the trail. We were glad we went on this hike! Well worth it.

100% a must see in the area. Not exactly silent, and the tunnel isn't lit in the slightest, but the interior is an environment that most people never get to see and both portals absolutely beautiful.

Very cool place to walk. Bring a flashlight and a light sweater. Also walk towards the center the sides are very uneven and seen plenty of people fall and trip.

We loved the hike! Definitely take flash light or light on phone works well. There is a spring that runs out of side of the tunnel.
