This is a beautiful stop along the Bighorn River. It offers good protection from the wind on a warm, sunny, but windy, spring day. The historic buildings are neat and the wild turkeys put on a good show for us. The history of this site is very interesting. Lastly, I appreciated the clean restrooms.

Bighorn Canyon isn’t known for its hiking trails. And the few hiking trails there lead down to scenic overlooks of the river and canyon. There is one exception and that is the rugged 3 mile Upper Layout Creek trail that climbs up into the Pryor Mts with some very impressive views of the canyon area and a very surprising green “oasis” and waterfall at trail’s end. The trailhead for Upper Layout Creek is at the Snell Ranch and is clearly marked.

There are a couple small log buildings, and a good number of old pieces of farm equipment. There are also a few interpretive signs, and an orchard seems to be in progress.
Unfortunately, it seems the main building burned down fairly recently - I was there in September, 2017 - although it already shows as burned in the satellite images. Still, it's a peaceful spot for a picnic or to stretch your legs.
