Very enchanting location for a bookstore! Down a little walkway behind a house. They had great deals and good finds!

Despite the small space, I think I bought more books here than I have at any bookstore I've been to in many years. Mitch's curation is just spectacular for my tastes. Great if you're interested in literature, philosophy, and art.

Such an awesome place! Was walking along and just stumbled upon it, ended up buying 15 books! Lots of different genres and sooo much character. Love it.

What a cool place! Found it on a walk around the neighborhood and spent time browsing for a book. Friendly, clean space and unique selections. I chose a boxed set for my students and liked the price. Winner winner! Will definitely return!

The best curated used book store I’ve been to. A definite focus on lit, both English and foreign translations. I’d say the name says it all: if you’ve read Melville and loved it you’ll love Melville (books). My sincere thanks to the owner of this shop and I really wish them success so I can continue to be a patron.

I discovered Meville Books because my phone was nearly dead, and for a brief few minutes I was listening to the world around me instead of drowning it out with headphones and 2010s top hits.

...and there it was, a completely random chance when I came across this tucked away gem off of Alberta. There are few things more endearing than a book shop with too many books, and there's no limit to the variety in stock. Whether you're a philosophy fan and picking up a used copy of Nietzsche at you Hinger date's recommendation (spoiler: it didn't work out), or wanting to pick up something more recent, and palatable - you'll likely find it here.

Absolutely adorable. A diverse selection of quality books packed into a tiny location. It is a fun spot to visit!

Book readers will love the place. A bit small, but lots and lots of books from different genres.

Hands down the best-curated bookshop this side of the Mississippi. If you love literature and are visiting Portland, skip Powells and come straight here.

So excited about this sweet bookstore! Great selection, friendly owner and my son really enjoyed the kids section and found one of his favorite books for two dollars. This is definitely going to become one of our favorite spots and we’re so happy to have them in the neighborhood!

There are some lovely specialty bookstores on Alberta but Melville Books really fills what felt like a bit of a gap- with lots and lots of classics as well as more unique finds in non-fiction and fiction at super reasonable prices. Not to mention it’s the sweetest little location and the owner was super friendly when I visited. I’m so glad they’re here and hope they’re here to say- give them a visit 💓

My favorite bookstore in town! A hidden gem for sure. They always have a great selection of cheap books out front and tons of cool old bantam books and sci fi. I always end up getting way more than I’m anticipating and it’s always way cheaper than I’m anticipating!

My two favorite used bookstores in the world are Berkeley Books of Paris (before it permanently closed) and Melville Books on Alberta Street. Melville is the perfect nook to find your next read.

This gem is now my default bookstore. A lean, well curated collection means I spend my time debating which great find to buy instead of trying to find something interesting in the first place. Great prices, great selection, great vibe.

Every book here is either something I’ve desperately been meaning to read or something I didn’t know before but now desperately need to read. Everything from dissections of Norse mythology to Elena Ferrante to obscure, absorbing math books. If you don’t know what you‘re looking for, the owner is friendly and knows his stuff and helped me find my way to some great finds. Also, the entrance is beautiful; it feels like walking into a secret garden. Definitely recommend.

P.S. See if you can spot the mural of a jaguar roaring at an owl in space before you walk in
