Community of Jesus

The tower looks a little scary, its surroundings are beautiful, the door is a masterpiece, but what is really impressive is the mosaic on the ceiling and on the floor of the altar; since I entered I felt a little out of my zone, because it seems rather, an Orthodox church, with a Jewish one, is very difficult to explain. The baptismal font is attractive and has 4 Hebrew letters (I think), one in each cardinal point, the pedestal is majestic and the Christ is out of this world. Definitely an interesting and quiet place to visit

Although I live over 8 hours away I am able to visit my mother who lives there frequently. She is quite happy and has many kind and caring friends. I am always very warmly welcomed when visiting her. Her friends are very sincere and supportive.

After many years of visits, as well as living for a long time in this incredible place, I continue to be amazed and grateful for what a treasure it is. I get there as much as I can and am overwhelmed, revived, embraced and refreshed by God’s spirit and His love. The guesthouse, church services, concerts, gift shop, tours, retreats are wonderful. Thank you Community of Jesus for being here and for all you do. The world badly needs you.

The most beautiful masterpiece of art that you'll ever see on Cape Cod. You will stand in awe of the beauty... You do not have to be religious nor have to ever have stepped into an art gallery or had ever really appreciated art in your life to enjoy this experience. It was quite profound and can't wait to go back.

If you're on the Cape for the first time you must come and get a tour from the wonderful tour guide. She was fantastic.

Per the request of the church I will not be uploading any of the photos that I took. It wouldn't matter anyways because the photos do not do it justice. This is something you HAVE to see in person, because The experience is not just visual there is an outer worldly humbling feeling that is the what makes this church so amazing.

I have observed the transformation of this community from a few committed Christians in the late 1960s to the largest monastic community in the US. The concerts and plays are put on with a meticulous attention to detail and excellent background settings. My sister just returned from the most recent play “Pilgrims Progress” and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Also the church is truly a work of art and has the feeling of an early basilica of Christianity, something you can experience here without traveling to Europe.

If you are in the area take the time to visit. Beware that a prior notice of visit is best as they often have special events with a Christian theme. But watch their Website and definitely do visit the many public events held during the year. No matter what your persuasion this place will leave you with an experience that you will never forget.

A most beautiful gem! We are visiting from California & stumbled upon this when we made what we thought a wrong turn; belief is He led us there! Thank you for the tour & allowing us to share in this peaceful & love-filled Community.

A beautiful monastic community with a breathtaking church filled with mosaics, frescoes, and the sounds of Gregorian Chant. A "must-see" on any visit to Cape Cod.

Looking forward to the upcoming holiday season with this welcoming community. Definitely plan to visit this year now that we can be together in person.

The art, mosaics, glass and organ at the church are truly world class and the musicians are recognized by professional peers for the quality of their performances. The publishing house, Paraclete Press, offers a range of Christian classics as well as contemporary authors so that as someone raised catholic and now in a second year of Buddhist studies, I appreciate the range of offerings related to my Christian roots at their bookstore that I visit once a year or for a gift. The quality and dedication to worshipping God thru the arts is exemplary here. The new performance center in Brewster is an investment in the broader community, as well. And for these reasons in particular I have given four stars.

Todays Community of Jesus is different from the one I grew up near and visited as a guest for youth activities in the 1970s and 1980s in Orleans. I have both childhood friends and people I care about who continue to live at the Community and I have some who have left the Community. Several years ago I attended a holiday music service and during the homily the minister spoke briefly to the fact that their are parts of their history as a Community that they are not proud about (I don’t remember the exact phrasing). For me, an organization that has found its way to ground itself in a recognized Christian tradition - Benedictine - and to at least comment in the open of public worship about their own recognition of transgressions, is an organization that is traveling a path of growth. For the people I care about who were harmed by past practices, I am sorry and I will say the same thing to my catholic friends and members of my Buddhist community that grew out of the remains of sangha that “fell apart” after a former leader’s sexual impropriety.
I offer these reflections to simply ground this review in the fact that I am not blind to the Community’s past, and at the same time I am most interested in meeting or visiting with others where they are at this moment in time on their spiritual journey. Today’s Community certainly deserves four stars for the quality of their arts, music, and artistry created and performed in service to the ideals of worship…and done so by human beings, like all of us.
