My brother Raymond was in Select Speciality Hospital Gulfport on three different occasions. The first time he was put on a ventilator because he had gotten Septic from a Pressure Wound at a different facility. Select worked with him to to remove the ventilator and breathe on his own. The Pulmonary Specialist took him off of some of his medications and was able to get him off of vent. All of the staff was wonderful. We could not have ask for better care from Doctors, Nurses, Aids (CNA's) and other staff. He got the best treatment possible. The Wound Care Team was excellent and always open to answer questions. All of the staff were always sweet and kind to him. In fact, they really spoiled him rotten on all three hospital stays. Whenever he pressed the call button, they were quick to check on him. Also, the CEO, John O'Keefe checked on him regularly (almost every day), to see if he was doing OK. He would ask my brother lots of questions to make sure his needs were being met. He was also open to any questions I had. I was elated and surprised that the CEO would take up so much time with my brother. We will be forever grateful to Mr. O'Keefe and all of the staff at Select Speciality Hospital for their excellent care.

All of the nurses physical therapy and assistants went above and beyond to take care of my brother. Although very short staffed, their compassion and bedside manners were excellent.

After a month in a hospital, my mother was transferred to Speciality Select Hospital in Gulfport, where she received excellent care over a period of three weeks with some very challenging health issues. All of the staff, nurses, CNAs, housekeeping, physical therapists, and doctors took excellent care of my mother. SSH is located within Memorial Hospital which is great when additional or specialized care is needed. SSH's care helped propel my mother to recovery, and I can't say enough good things about them. I highly recommend Select Speciality Hospital as an Acute Care facility.

I have a friend who's husband was involved in a tragic accident with many broken bones, and on a ventilator while recovering. He was transferred to select after almost losing hope for a normal recovery. Within a very short time, he was off the ventilator and home walking and talking with family just in time for the holidays. We are so thankful for the doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, and physical therapists at select specialty hospital for their never ending care and support. Thank you all for all you do for our community! Highly recommend to anyone experiencing a similar situation.

About six months after my dad’s severe motorcycle accident on May 29, 2020, he was transported to Select Specialty Hospital-Gulf Coast on November 10, 2020. Upon his arrival at Select, my dad was already on a trach and a ventilator due to the severity of his injuries. During my dad’s first few weeks at Select, between the Respiratory and Speech Therapists spending a lot of time with him, he was off the ventilator and on a trach collar, breathing on his own with little oxygen being provided, breathing out of his mouth and his nose.

After facing some setbacks, on July 8, 2021, my dad was sent by ambulance to another hospital for a surgical procedure by a Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon. It was discovered by one of my dad’s doctors at Select that my dad had been breathing through an approximately three millimeter sized hole, which was causing episodes of apnea where my dad stopped breathing, blocking his airway, preventing him from getting enough oxygen to breathe properly. It was only a matter of time before this hole completely closed and shut off his airway altogether. Surgery was a success and my dad began doing more with physical therapy, lasting longer on the trach collar, rather than strictly depending on the ventilator to breathe for him. Whereas, when he was on the trach collar, he was doing most of the breathing on his own and the machine was just there as a backup.

Fast forward to months down the road, my dad had more going against him than he had going for him. Although he made significant improvements since his accident, especially since becoming a patient at Select Specialty Hospital, it just wasn’t ever enough. We advocated to have my dad transferred to a long term care rehabilitative facility since Select Specialty was only short term, preferring a neuro rehab facility, which we felt was what my dad needed to really improve due to his injuries. Unfortunately, due to how much time had passed since my dad’s accident, the fact that he was both on a ventilator and a trach and of course insurance/Medicaid specific to each facility, were all factors that stood in the way, hindering any opportunities my dad may have had going in his favor to be relocated.

After so many set backs, my dad continued to fight, wanting to improve. The severity of my dad’s injury and his situation just wasn’t ever going to allow that. His body, having had enough, began fighting against him instead of with him and began to shut down. The staff at Select never gave up on my dad, supporting him, caring for him and advocating for him just as we, his family, had. My dad had the biggest support system, at least one outside visitor every day that he was at Select, which he probably holds the record for the longest patient at Select, especially considering that it was a short term care facility and my dad managed to be a patient there from November 10, 2020 to January 19, 2023, when he took his last breath, surrounded by family and the caregivers of Select that became family to all of us. My dad was never alone at Select, having all of his caregivers, including the custodians, in his corner, supporting him, encouraging him and rooting for him. They all became so special to us, treated my dad like he was one of their own family members. The entire third floor of Select was in tears the day my dad passed away. Many of the nurses, respiratory therapists and administration even attended my dad’s funeral service, in addition to sending flowers and messages to our family. My dad really made an impact on Select Specialty Hospital and Select made even more of an impact on our family! I would highly recommend Select Specialty Hospital to anyone in the situation of needing to place a family member there or being a patient at Select themselves, without any hesitation whatsoever. If I needed to do it all over again with my dad, or another family member, I would most definitely give Select Specialty Hospital that opportunity again.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart Select Specialty Hospital ~ Danielle N. Gill, daughter of David “Dobber” Dobbs - Room 341

We have been here for over 24 days, the nurses and techs were very accommodating and compassionate, they have even took the time out of their day to come say hello to my mom when they were not assigned to her. Housekeeping came twice a day to clean the room. The food in the cafeteria was good and well seasoned, the menu choices for the patients were good. The one negative incident we had was taken care of immediately and satisfactory.

My brother, David Dobbs, spent the last 26 months of his life at Select Specialty, Gulfport, after sustaining major injuries from a motorcycle accident. The first 6 months following the accident, he was at Forrest General in Hattiesburg. The goal at that time was to get him stabilized (neck broke, on a vent and trach) and working on his breathing. Fast forward 6 months, his family was able to get him transferred to Select, a vent weaning facility in Gulfport. The entire 26 months at Select involved weaning David off the vent, trying to get him stronger with his body, working on his speech - and keeping him well from continuous infections that were inevitable in his situation. Some days/weeks/months they were successful. Some they were not. David was never able to talk again but showed his personality through his facial expressions and his big brown eyes. David was never able to remain off the vent for long periods of time due to several complications. The staff at Select Specialty never gave up on David - even if deep in their heart and in their medical opinion, they didn't think he would ever get better, they did
everything they could do - medically and with their heart and care - to try. David wanted to keep trying and so Select continued to try with him. They 'learned and cared' about David in a way that can be tough - one sided verbal communication. The staff took all our calls, all our questions, all our uncertainties and tried to be there for us with each step. The day David passed away was tough not only on his family but on the staff that was with him that morning - and on the ones that were not with him.
The trials and errors, the availability, the compassion - and yes, the friendships gained - are only a few reasons why Select Specialty would be recommended to others. But for me, I would recommend Select because of their determination to not give up - try again or try something new or another way - before saying 'there is nothing more we can do.' Because of this, it allowed David's family to keep trying along with them and allowed us those 26 months to be with him.

I stayed here for one week (all the insurance would cover, but I was nearly ready for home). My stay was over a holiday weekend, so I didn't experience as much of the therapy as I might have, but the therapy staff I did work with were delightful. I have to say the staff was exceptionally kind and caring.
My only complaint was that the kitchen staff (who made a great effort) didn't seem to comprehend what vegetarian means. I received several dishes with beef or chicken gravy on them.
I recovered more quickly than expected (had a temporary trach in because of pneumonia & complications). I've had at least 3 follow-up calls from people at the hospital making sure I didn't have any complications, problems or questions. Before I left they set up appointments with all the doctors I needed to see for follow-up.

My mother was at Select after having covid-19 and being on a respirator for 7 days in North MS. It was God, that is all that I can tell you. We were blessed to have an opening in this facility where they took excellent care of our mother. They made sure that she was able to communicate with us daily via zoom and she went from being out of it, unable to speak or even breath without oxygen to able to speak in whispers and lowering her oxygen dependency before transferring to a rehabilitation facility, Encompass, another winner! They answered any questions that we had during her stay and even put up pictures of our family all around the room so that she would realize what she was working back toward. They answered any questions that we had every time we talked. We SO appreciate their care of our mother. Mom told us, after she went to the rehabilitation hospital, that she didn't worry about a thing in this environment. She said that they were totally attentive and she would sometimes drop something and it wouldn't hit the floor good before someone was along to pick it up. God bless them being with our loved ones who are so sick in these times of covid where people are dependent on those wonderful souls to take care of them in the place of their families. You have a special place in heaven.

My mother was a patient for an extended stay, actually on two different occasions. Very happy with the care she received. My mother has been hospitalized for over 3 1/2 months and was in 4 different hospitals, but Select was clearly the best, out of all of them.

Who hasn't heard 'there is no place like home'. Especially when ill, we want to be with our family. If true, Select Specialty Hospital, in Gulfport, MS, is the next best place to home and family for recovery. A simple overnight procedure in another hospital, left me critically ill in ICU.
After two months of no noticeable improvement the decision was made to transfer me to Select Specialty Hospital. Three weeks with the committed to my care by a family oriented staff- I am going home to my family to finish recovering

Everyone was so nice and positive. Even though my father was a handful at 1st the nurses did not seem to mind caring for him. Kim the Case Manager went above and beyond with helping me with my fathers needs. It was truly a blessing to have crossed paths with this hospital.

Its been a great stay, I kind of hate that I have to go home I have round the clock nurses and they all have taken great care of me. The food is great they always bring me hot food. I love this facility, if I ever come back i would love to stay in the same room. They rehab team always took me outside to enjoy the fresh air. Everyone here was so nice, they staff treated me like a king.

Great nursing care. My assigned advocate, John was very helpful as well as uplifting. The care I received from staff went above and beyond the standard care that you would expect.
