It's a peaceful, quiet place where an atrocity occurred. Perhaps it was the absolute worst mass shooting in American history. Like other such locations, it has a monument with a history of its own. Updated over the years to its current accuracy, it is but one reminder of the tragedy that occurred there on January 21, 1863.

Attended #BearRiverMassacre 160th anniversary at the memorial site with NW Band Shoshone and our friend Darren Parry and tribal leaders. Honored by #Idaho proclamation signed by Brad Little. #wudaogwa

Beautiful area. The Shoshone people are an inspiration, they set an example to all in remembering their ancestry yet determination to move forward.

Public marker with free access. Free historical attraction that appears to have had one plaque (south side) removed/stolen. Interesting information.

We need to remember what happened here. It's amazing what Darren is doing to restore this land and to correct the false narrative about what happened here. The new Placard titled Bear River Massacre is thanks to Darren and helps us understand what's actually happened.

The culmination of almost 5yrs of mutual blood letting involving attacks on migrant trains, theft of stock, retaliatory actions, and the murder of random innocents who had little to do with any of it. The action was carried out by the 3rd California volunteer infantry (not the "US Army"), and 2nd California volunteer cavalry.

It resulted in a 4hr battle wherein the Shoshone (200+ warriors), who were waiting for them in defensive positions, were ultimately outflanked and defeated. 224 shoshone killed, 160 captured. California forces casualties numbered 21 kia, 46 wia, and 75 deep frostbite casualties.

Sad chapter in a l9ng history of misunderstanding, mistrust, and blood for blood actions that claimed many across three decades.

Beautiful, quiet, and great place to overnight camp. Very somber feel. I have a lot of reverence for this site. No restroom facilities.
