The home of Dr. Samuel Mudd is a little off the beaten path but is well worth the effort is you are a history buff. The home of Dr. Mudd is where John Wilkes Booth and David Herold came seeking medical treatment for Booth’s Broken Leg following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Dr. Mudd was later arrested and spent almost 4 years in prison for assisting the assassin. The home is well preserved and remained in the Mudd Family for several Generations. I was able to take the guided tour of the home which was conducted by a wonderful lady in period dress. The tour was more like a conversation than an actual scripted tour. Most of the furniture in the home actually belonged to the Mudd Family including a number of pieces that belonged to Dr. Mudd including the Sofa and bed Dr. Mudd treated Booth. The tours are very informal, which adds to the wonderful history of the site. There is a small gift shop where you purchase your tour tickets and are greeted by your guide. After the house tour you are free to walk around the grounds at your leisure. After I finished my visit, I made my way about 5-miles down the road to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church where Dr. Mudd and other members of his family are buried. I really enjoy my visit here and the tour was one of the best I have ever had.

Friendly staff and very knowledgeable. I and two college mates stop by to hear the history behind Dr. Mudds acquaintance to John Booth. One of my classmates is a history buff. I enjoyed her asking questions while the rest of us was in awe. Just learning the in-depth information that we don't get in our early learning through high school information. If you intrigued with history, this is the place to be. They had the house decorated very beautifully for the Christmas holiday season. One of the staff mentioned come back in the summer. We will go more in depth then just talk about Dr. Mudd's family doing the holidays. Yes, I will return in the summer to get more history knowledge! Highly recommend! If you interested in being a volunteer they can always use your help along with your support!

The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the family history. Learned more about the history of the assassination of President Lincoln than I did in school.

This place is such an absolute gem. Incredible history preserved and there for you to step in to. I took the house tour and also an outside walking tour of Booth’s escape route to the Zekiah Swamp led by a historian named Bob who was FANTASTIC!!! So knowledgeable and kind and engaging. I feel so fortunate to have had the experience and couldn’t recommend it more!!! Go experience history come alive!

Great site! Our docent was great, and the staff in the shop were knowledgeable about the books they were selling. It was interesting to see the items Dr. Mudd made during his time in prison.

I remember coming here a while back when i was younger. It was definitely haunted. I remember a candle was knocked off like some cabinet or drawer or something. Definitely a frightening experience 😭

This is another historic treasure on the John Wilkes Boothe escape tour and this was very interesting. The historic guides know their history and attempt to.convince that the Mudd family did not know what happened or that their guest John Wilkes Boothe was the one who shot the president. Very, very interesting!!!😄😃

This place is great just went during their Victorian Christmas weekend. Had civil war reenactors set up out front, guides in period clothing described the rooms inside. Santa was there as well. Representative from the local metal detecting group with display of the finds was interesting. Went a couple years ago during another anniversary event and it was just as good with a lot of role players. Keep an eye on when their events occur and go then.

Although it can be a bit pricey compared to other Lincoln related museums, the quality of artifacts are exceptional. Great place to take your kids for an exciting glimpse into the past. The museum is by tour only, so you can expect to gain a lot of info on 20th century medicine and the enigmatic Dr. Mudd, and a bit about country living. They even let you go into the slaves quarters, and tell you about the mudds slaves.

I visited specifically for the walking tour and ironically on the anniversary of Booth shooting Lincoln. The docent, Bob led us from the yard of the Mudd home to the Zekiah swamp.

This was the same route Harold and Booth used when they left the Mudd home; headed south to Virginia. It doesn't get much better than literally walking in the steps of American history

Along the route we stopped and Bob shared first hand accounts of the events while Booth and Harold were on the property. He also engaged the group and answered question. His enthusiasm was contagious. I also learned a little insight in to the Mudds and their neighborhood.

This tour is not something regularly done. I suggest following them on social media and when they announce dates for this specific tour.

Unfortunately I arrived too late for a tour of the home. By the time the walking tour ended the home was closed. I was told that when I paid and while disappointed I didn't see the house I am not the least bit upset. After all I came for the walking tour.

I did visit the home years ago but it was so long ago I don't remember it. If the house tour is anything like the walking tour I am sure it is well worth it.

Did I mention the price for this excellent adventure was 8 dollars? I've spent three times that and learned next to nothing at other places.

If you are a Lincoln or Civil War buff I highly recommend the Dr. Mudd house. I have had a long time fascination with the Lincoln assassination and this just enhanced my knowledge.
