I have had discussions with Deputy Clerk Jane about the status of the case.

If you are the defendant in a criminal or traffic case (The State of Ohio vs.... Your financial status will be investigated and if the Judge declares you qualified, a public defender will be appointed to represent you.

Who assigns a public defender?

Public defenders are appointed by the court for defendants who cannot afford to hire private counsel. If you do not have bail, the court will automatically appoint a court-appointed lawyer on your first appearance date, known as your arraignment.

Can you get a public defender before arraignment?

Typically, there is no mechanism for getting a public defender until you are formally charged. In some courts, there is a government office that determines if you are eligible, in others the judge will review your financial situation and decide whether or not you qualify.

Why was Scott Gordan attorney of law appointed? Prior to an arraignment or formal charges?
