A fabulous, good old-fashioned sweat fest in the fairy forest of an Appalachian alpine eco system. It’s 4.5 miles out and back to Little Butt, 7 miles out and back to Big Butt, if you decide to summit. The views are stunning. It’s a lot of climbing, but it’s usually quite a bit cooler, and the air feels and smells amazing.

This is possibly the best of the half day hikes one can do from Montreat. Challenging terrain, but can still be done in a half day if you maintain a decent clip. Spectacular views and a few different ecosystems to hike through. Not to be missed if you like a medium range hike.

One of my favorite trail heads: cooler due to elevation, less crowded, multiple trails are each quiet, lush & away from traffic

Beautiful spot along the parkway. Not much of a hike, perfect for watching the sunset or sunrise. Bring a wind breaker or rain jacket just in case. Highly recommend, especially with a furry friend.
