Quaint, Family Diner. Great Tunes. They have booths, tables and stools at a counter. 1940-60's decor. Worth the trip!

I had an excellent breakfast, I liked this place a lot. The waitress was very friendly and checked on me quite a bit, making sure I had coffee. There were a couple of different choices on dairy breakfast specials. I chose the eggs and biscuits and gravy as well as one huge pancake yummy. If you are in the area, I would definitely come by and have a seat.

I love going to the Hartwig's diner! The food is always very good, consistent and hot. I enjoy getting the prime rib omelet, homemade soup and also the huge pancakes, all of which are excellent! We always receive great customer service by the owner and enjoy seeing him when we go in for breakfast. I would highly recommend you checking this place out if your in or near the Waterloo area!

We were doing a bicycle tour across Wisconsin and swung in for some lunch. This place is really neat. The decor is older but well kept. Lots of pictures and decorations cover the walls. It was quiet. The service was excellent. The menu was great. I had the Chipotle bacon cheese burger... cheese curds and some fries. All was really good.

The fish fry is phenomenal. The fries are a top secret recipe. The all you can eat fish is well worth the price. The atmosphere is like a family vibe. The servers were friendly. I'm definitely going back. Only open Friday evening for dinner. All other days are breakfast. The Ham & Cheese omelet is also awesome.

Had Sunday morning breakfast after church. What an awesome treat!! Fresh bread bowl with eggs, meat, cheese, gravy. My hubby had a duck skillet, so good, the flavor was incredible! Highly recommend anything you may order here. So very, very good and everything homemade.

Hungry? ABSOLUTELY WORTH THE STOP!! A family-owned and operated establishment with a nostalgic atmosphere!! Once you walk through the doors you will know exactly what I mean. Definitely has that hometown feel. The owner/culinary artist is widely known and quite popular for his very delicious, unique and creatively named soups. The kettle typically sells out before the end of the day and he is only open for 4-5 hours depending on the day. (Besides Fridays, which he reopens for Fish Fry/ Prime Rib from 4-7.) I ABSOLUTELY ADORE THIS PLACE!! Hearty, delicious food. BEST soups EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Additionally, he uses Crave Brothers Farmstead Cheese which is locally produced in Waterloo, WI. One of the BEST cheese producers around!

You will thank me ten-fold. ENJOY!! I know you will. 😉

Arrived there around noon today after we checked in at the local Municipal Building to find out what they thought was the best place in Waterloo to have lunch. They recommended here downtown. It was 1/2 filled with customers. First impressions was a dated but clean old school diner, complete with stools at a bar and booths, much like stepping back in time 50 plus years. Owner Scott was a one man show this day, cook, waitress, etc. (but you would never know it). He greeted/seated us, took our orders, cooked our orders, and accepted payment, all while carrying on conversations with all customers. Our orders came out of the kitchen quickly. The soups of the day were exceptional, and while we all ordered various burgers, they were all excellent, thick and juicy on ho-made, buttered, toasted buns. The fries were hot and tasty as well. We will definitely be back.

The food was delicious and made to order. My son got 2 pancakes and was amazed that they were almost bigger than his plate. We will be sure to come back next time we are in Waterloo!

An amazing nostalgic diner with small town charm and warm character. My Mom and I take day trips from West Allis to smaller towns in southeastern Wisconsin searching for a good lunch and conversation. This restaurant is one of our favorite finds. On our day, the owner was cook, server, bus person and historian. He made us feel welcome and part of his town's family. The owner also has a small early TV / radio / telephone museum next to the diner. You can peer in through the store front window and see the earliest telephones, radios and TV's. I digressed, back to the food. My Mom's eyes popped when she saw her 2 pancakes. Huge pancakes that come to the edge of a ceramic dinner plate. She said that they were cooked perfectly with a golden brown on each side, airy and thick. She rated her huge golden brown pancakes; the nostalgic atmosphere of the diner and the warm conversation with the owner at 5+ stars. I agree with her 5 plus rating out of 5 stars.

I work in Waterloo and this is my "go to" for lunch nearly every day. I love Scott's soups made from scratch with fresh local ingredients. Daily specials are always reasonable and quite a variety. Scott has quite an imagination and is a master of many things, but cooking is his specialty. He is a one man show most of the time, but still manages to get things out timely. It just feels like a 2nd home for me. I highly recommend!

We live in Lake Mills but whenever we’re passing through Waterloo (a few times a year) we try to stop for breakfast. Fair prices and I like that they use fresh veggies (peppers, onions, mushrooms) in their skillets. They also use local cheese, which why not? French Toast is my fav. Would recommend if you’re passing through. My only recommendation is larger coffee mugs.

We are starting to visit more often, usually during the week. We decided to check out the weekend for service and food. It was very busy and with the social distancing they actually ran out of tables it was pleasant dining experience and the food was very good. Our only complaint was that they were out of orange juice before 10 am.

Each trip to Hartwig's Waterloo Diner has been met with prompt, friendly service and "out of this world" comfort food. There's simply no finer diner in the land. Their soups are nothing short of scrumptious and are what you parent's parents used to make!! You will not be disappointed with your visit.
