Personally this is my favorite section of the foothills trail. Whether you just want to do a day hike to Virginia Hawkins falls or laurel fork falls, or if you want to do the crown jewel section of the foothills to the bad creek access this is an amazing hike. Once you get to jocassee this is a pretty tiring hike but worth every bit of it! Awesome place to go to get out in nature and soak in all the beautiful views. Tons of campsites along the trail as well.

Cool trail to take your Jeep ot 4wd on. It's all gravelled but there are some large "speed bumps" that I would not want to attempt in a car. Single lane for the most part so you need to keep an eye out for bikes and other traffic. Beautiful views along the way and at the top.

Made the trip to all the way to the end of Bootleg Rd. then back to Jumping Off Rock. The road was in good shape. Stayed at Jumping Off Rock until it was dark. Had no problem in or out.

Parked here to access the hike from rt 178 to the overlook at Sassafras Mountain. Can’t speak to the other direction, but the hike up was pretty steep with many stairs and daily strenuous. Overlook is very rewarding, remainder of hike is largely in the woods with varied terrain mostly dry, crosses the road once about halfway up. I think 5 miles or less, about 2 hours at a good pace going up one way.

Incredible walk on Foothills Trail. Trail leaves Laurel Gap for a 4.7 mile hike over Chimney Top and then to the top of Sassafras Mountain, the tallest mountain in South Carolina. Very Strenuous but very nice. You can drive to the top if you don't want to hike but you will miss a fantastic walk!

Although this is off Hwy 178 the access road can be easily missed. Other than that small gripe this place is awesome !! It has plenty of trails and gravel roads. ATVs are allowed after September 15 except on Sundays. Saturdays with a hunting license and a WMA permit. I believe ATVs are then prohibited after the spring until next September 15th. The beauty is boundless. Plenty of wildlife. Rainbow and Brown trout in the streams and creeks.

Fantastic parking with easy access to the Foothills trail. Get there early, it fills up quickly. Maybe has space for 40 cars with some creative parking.
