Story Restaurant

This is my second time eating here. From appetizers to desserts, the food was presented nicely and tasted well. Hemingway was excellent. Great attention to detail from the front-end staff. Excellent hospitality and very rare to find in the Midwest. My only suggestion for the chef is to devise some delicious special sauces to compliment the wide array of entrees. In addition, to add an additional vegetarian option or rotate ingredients to better suit that dietary restriction. Lastly, to continually elevate presentation of the food and search for more exotic ingredients.

Update: Here are some photos of the food from my Valentine’s Date! The food was delicious but not as memorable as I had hoped. The dessert was very hard to eat. Nonetheless, we will try again in the future and the rating remains the same.

I can't believe I hadn't ever been to Story before this! We had a pretty early rez (5pm Sunday) so arrived with the place to ourselves, but by 7pm it was packed. And rightfully so.

The pear goat cheese salad and duck empanadas were fantastic. Dishes where you can taste every individual unique flavor (and the candied nuts are crushed small so they don't just take over everything).

I ordered the lobster and shiitake tagliatelle as my entree and I would have licked the plate if it would have seemed appropriate. All 3 plates were so delicately done and absolutely delicious.

I really liked Brian's entree too: beef short rib is apparently a staple on their menu and I can see why. The meat is perfection from the sauce to the tenderness. The gnocchi were a little tighter than I expected (more like spaetzle) but the perfect bite was a little of the crispy onion ring, a little of the flake-apart beef, and a mini gnocchi.

We got fries to start and demolished them, though they were just a tiny bit over salted. The aioli is the key.

I liked the lemon cake but LOVED the carrot cake with mascarpone buttercream and crunchy salty bits on top.

Pair with good cocktails and a great wine list and we were happy diners.

Delicious!!! We loved everything about our experience at Story. It was the most dreamy date night ever. The soft shell crab was the best part of my evening, 10/10 will be back again. Professional service and warm environment.

Story continues to be one of the best fine dining experiences in Kansas City. It is not easy to uphold high standards after many years, and Story is always impressive with a well curated menu that is consistently creative and always very well executed. The wine list is good with a reasonable selection but usually on the expensive side. Dessert is always excellent and the appetizers are typically the best selections.

Everything was amazing. Maria our server was very knowledgeable and friendly, the food was outstanding. The lobster tagliatelle is a must. The best part of my night though was Jon, the manager. From the greeting to the door to the goodbye at the end, Jon makes you feel special. Will definitely be back

My girlfriend and I had a great experience dining here this past week. The fried chicken (which, according to our waiter, is only available on Wednesdays) was absolutely delicious but still light. We also enjoyed the pork ravioli, lobster tagliatelle, and duck empanadas. The wait staff was very accommodating and the ambience was lovely. One of my favorite restaurants in Kansas City!

Story has delicious food that isn’t greasy with a quiet ambiance. Our server Chris made the dining experience fun and easy. Story took our coats upon entering, and let us sit and chat for 45 mins after we paid! They have indoor and outdoor seating options. I would def come again to try their different fixed courses.

Such a wonderful dinner tonight. Service was top notch and the food lived up to its billing. We had such a great time and tried pretty much everything on the menu. It was all outstanding through and through.

Heard great things and it certainly lived up to the expectations! Classy place, knowledgeable staff, great ambience. Had the tagliatelle, Brussels sprouts, short ribs, and finished with doughnuts and it was incredible. Everything on the menu sounded great and I will certainly be heading back. Highly recommend!

My husband and I have dined at story quite a few times over the past several years. The food is always impeccable. Beautiful flavors that just make you say wow. I will say that we have experienced rude/snobby servers at story, not every time but more than once. I've been willing to overlook it since the food is just so dang good. Going into it you should know it's a fine dining establishment with small portion sizes and higher price tags than your average restaurant. You get what you pay for, amazing food costs more. :)

Service is impeccable, the dishes all fresh and inviting. They make their own bread daily. We asked to split a salad & chef gave us each one (no extra charge). A seafood risotto was delightful and huge. Veal dish very tender. All in all a five star experience.

Food looked and tasted amazing! The restaurant took all precautions to ensure everyone was safe. But, what sends Story over the top was the courtesy, professionalism & warmth of the staff...OUTSTANDING experience!

Always great service and awesome service. The short ribs are a staple on their menu and a solid selection. The seasonal soft shell crabs are delicious. For dessert, you must try their doughnuts served on top of a passion fruit purée.

The halibut was so good that my post about it on Facebook got my account restricted. You can either use your imagination to guess what I said or go try it yourself. I highly recommend trying it yourself.
Additionally, I am celiac and found them to be highly accommodating. My only complaint is that this restaurant is several states away from my home.

My girlfriend and I went to story last night. Our server, Robert, was an awesome host and the entire staff was attentive to our needs. It made for a wonderful date night! She had the duck breast and I had the beef tenderloin. It was all excellent. I’m a professional chef myself and a pretty big stickler for places I try. Story exceeded each of those expectations that I had. Each dish was well composed and when put together, was truly a great culinary experience. The duck was tender but rich. The beef was again so tender but exuded the rich flavor that the chef was putting on the plate. We shared the Brussel sprouts and French fries as sides. They were both great. The sprouts are dressed in a mustard sauce but again, they tasted great. The fries were well seasoned with rosemary salt for a “oh my goodness, I need to keep eating this” feeling lol. For the end of our meal, we shared the lemon tart cake and again, it was excellent. My only gripe is that the honey ice cream was a little strong on the front end but still it was delicious. So kind of a nitpick there. My girlfriend had a cocktail called the “Hemingway” and she also really enjoyed it. The only downside that story has is it’s interior. It’s lovely but because they’re seating so many people in a large open room with lowered ceilings, it gets very loud and it’s hard to hear the conversation happening at your own table. That’s my only gripe. And it’s really not much of a gripe to be honest. I’d still go back to Story. Highly recommend, 9/10 stars.

Perhaps the best meal I've had in KC and one of the best all time. Usually in nicer places like this I expect the food to be great but invariably there is always something, or somethings, that don't quite make the cut. Not so with Story.

Everything was spot on, from the start with a couple dirty martinis made just the way we like them. Then on to french fries (pom frites really), followed by beets and caesar salads. The caesar was was balanced and fresh so I didn't miss the anchovies. My wife's beets salad was wonderful with a smokey quality over a subtle sweetness.

And dude... there's a reason the short ribs have been on the menu for 13(?) years. Exquisite is the only way I could sum that up. When the waiter brought it out I almost balked because he did not bring a meat knife, then I realized I could have cut it with a spoon. Delicious and tender with a light sauce that let the flavors shine on a little bed of gnocchi and green beans that somehow were still squeaky! Then the tempura dipped onion rings redefined that side forever.

Wife had the dinner sized portion of the raviolis and again, wonderful and balanced with each of the flavors blending quietly together while still maintaining their own.

Wine list is not crazy but has a very nice selection to go with any of these dishes and a fine palate. I even got turned on to Belle de Brillet Liqueur Cognac (like a warm fireside embrace) to pair perfectly with my lemon cake. The wife had the carrot cake, which again will raise that bar to new heights, and finished up with a perfect cup of espresso.

We WILL be back!

Our first time in for Valentine’s Day and we loved it! The mushroom risotto, sea bass and prime rib were to die for. We will be back!

Just the right balance of flavor without too much salt. I had the mahi mahi, which was perfectly tender and delicious. Variety on the menu provided something for everyone, whether you eat meat or vegan.

Food was incredible, fantastic service and an extensive wine list. Would definitely recommend you come try it out.
