He has been, my doctor, for a year and operated on me twice. Every interaction with him has been great. He takes his time to listen and makes sure you leave your appointment understanding what was discussed. He is easy to speak to and open to answering any questions you have. Bedside manners are fine never had a negative experience. Dr.Alter is very straightforward no surprises just honest. Great doctor for sure

We’ve seen Dr. Alter for years. Unfortunately both of my kids have had have had multiple hand incidents, but Steve has been great with them. He is personable and spends time getting to know you a bit as a patient. And he manages the injuries to that end.

The staff has always been very responsive, courteous, and kind.

I recently took my daughter in with a broken hand. Dr. Alter was kind, made an effort to connect with my daughter, and took the time to explain her condition and treatment. I can understand that some people might be put off by his quick pace, but we were happy with his treatment and I would definitely recommend him.

Dr Alter is the cream of the crop. Best of the best. Tore my pec, he knew immediately it was torn and we got an MRI to make sure. He was right, scheduled me for surgery 5 days later. No pain post-op and I’m lifting again 6 weeks later. He killed it, thank you so much Dr.

I shattered my wrist in a roller blading injury. Dr Alter did an amazing job with my care and the surgery itself. I have 100% use of my hand today. He is very well known in Chelmsford as a great option for hand/wrist injuries and many of my friends and associates have used him with great success. Would absolutely use him again and refer him to my loved ones.

Although I can respect the perspectives of previous posters, my experience was completely different. Although I was apprehensive due to the negative reviews, I found Dr. Alter to be kind, caring, and highly skilled at explaining his medical analysis in a clear manner to my 9 year old daughter. He also made sure that all of my questions were answered before I left.

His bedside manner may be a little gruff but I had surgery with in days and he left no scars and I got full function back in hand no other docrord even said I would get that. So I would rather a great surgeon that if gruff ... Than a hack who smiles at me .

I've had issues from an old injury. Dr Alter gave me a cortisone shot in my hand I've had relief for a long time. His a specialist he knows his business that's what I'm there for. Thank you Doc for giving me relief!

June 1 I fell and broke both wrist bones. Dr Alter was fantastic for everything. He is very straight forward and professional and that works for me.

Took me at the time of my appointment. Didn’t have to sit around like normal dr.s offices. Very pleased with the service.

He is great- but I’m only giving 4 stars because his office secretary is terrible. On more than one occasion she had forgotten to put the chart in, making me wait for an hour when they didn’t even have it registered that I was there. If you check in and there are people after you, your chart goes to the bottom and she doesn’t get to it for a while, making your wait very long and people with later appointments than you are taken first. It’s very frustrating because the doctor is top notch and you want to be seen by him.

Had surgery years ago. Bad bedside manner. Right Before surgery he was making fun of an overweight "friend" he just saw while his overweight patient (me) was on the table waiting for surgery. Rude. Insensitive. Ignorant. Big ego. No feelings.

I was not happy with the treatment that I received from Dr. Altman. I feel he did not listen to my issue that I had been having with my arm. He allowed for an MRI, but still didn't take the time to really review. I had to receive a 2nd opinion and they found issues with the MRI and after surgery found that I had almost a full bicep tear. I also felt that his bedside manner was unappealing, I would not recommend this doctor.

Never had a Dr before that hated his job, worst bedside manner. My case worker, I was on workman’s comp encouraged me to go somewhere else

I had seen Dr. Alter for hand pain. The first couple of meetings with him were okay. However, in meeting with him today he was obviously annoyed that I was there, telling me that my nerve test 'proved' I didn't have carpal tunnel. He acted as if I already knew this and was there anyway. After further research on my own, it has been found that nerve tests are unreliable (see Science News 1999, University of Michigan study.) I'll be looking for another doctor that has better knowledge of how to diagnose carpal tunnel beyond simply this outdated test. I will say that other doctors at this practice are excellent and this negative review of Dr. Alter's bedside manner and medical knowledge should not reflect poorly on the practice as a whole.

Never want to go again... such worst treatment.
Starting from reception to the doctor seems have same mindset, no smile at patients and no nice talking. Just not with me, observed it's common practice for them with everyone.. wow
