I am currently a patient in the rehabilitation unit of the Brian Center and am receiving excellent care. I expect to be here a few more days, and while I might not want to live here, it has been a very good place to recover from joint replacement surgery. The staff have been great! Everyone is friendly yet professional with willing offers to help. When I first arrived, I was given a list of all the department heads and encouraged to call if I had any problems at all and also assigned an advocate to help me navigate the system if needed. Most of these people dropped by with a friendly smile to introduce themselves during the first few days and see if everything was okay. I haven’t had any problems, but the cheerful attitudes and desire to make things work give the unit an upbeat air.

Not that everything has gone smoothly. As is apparently somewhat common, there were delays in getting my medications. I had received some excellent advice before hand: If there are medications on which you are particularly dependent, always bring some with you--in the original packaging--in case of delays with the pharmacy. Do this whether you are going to a hospital or any other healthcare facility. (If the patient cannot manage their own meds, a responsible adult can leave them with the nurse.) I take some meds that I can miss for a day or two without serious repercussions, but two which, if missed, would cause some problems. The nurses were very helpful in tracking down my prescriptions--and also very relieved I had brought some with me which they happily dispensed. (And, of course, never take anything without informing the nurse.)

In view of the negative reviews online, I felt it important to leave a positive one. I have two more joint replacements on the horizon, and I would happily return here for my rehab. The food is about what you would expect from an institution with a budget--not what I would eat at home but palatable, but the care was better than I expected. These are people who care and I feel very grateful to have them caring for me.

I agree with Jennifer's review above. If you care about your family member, please do not send them to the Brian Center. Interestingly, Duke Hospital refers patients here with no regard to the incompetent care. Why would a world renowned medical center send patients to this hell hole? Minus 2 stars, but I can not submit this review without clicking on at least one star.

I would like to give this place negative stars if I had that option. My father-in-law went here for rehab. They took him in knowing he had dementia and was a fall risk. Instead of making arrangements for his safety they put him in a regular bed and left him unsupervised. He attempted to get out of bed twice, falling both times. The second time he fell so badly it caused a severe brain bleed. This type of incompetence and neglect is unacceptable from a place that advertises they are a #1 caregiver. Yes, NC has laws against bed rails and alarms close to the patients, but they do not have laws against alarms ringing at a central location or against the use of hi/lo beds. My father-in-law's condition has been exacerbated by a group that has no business working with people they cannot or do not want to care for. If you love your family and friends, do not let them go to this center.
