Oconee Humane Society

A few weeks ago I drove over an hour out to Oconee bc they had GSD needing homes. I called the day before I headed up about the adult male I was really interested in. The staff was so kind and honest, they told me all the concerns with him and discouraged me from adopting him. They didn’t feel it would be a safe environment for him or us. I was so impressed with their honesty it gave me confidence to trust in their recommendations. They clearly cared a great deal for all their doggos.

Instead she told me they had a 9 mo GSD puppy if I was interested. So I drove out the next morning and I met “Zeus”. If I’m honest, it was not love at first sight. He was skin and bones, dirty, clumps and clumps of hair hanging all over him. As I sat in the room with him the only read I got on him was that he had a kind soul. So I offered to foster to adopt and I took a chance, we took a chance on each other. They did warn me that he was seized, traumatized, and had zero socialization. That’s a tough combo in a GSD. But I have a lot of experience with the breed and knew he would take someone special.

The first few weeks were rough and I mean rough. I almost gave up on him a couple times. He was truly just wild, skittish, fearful, mild aggression towards dogs… and I have 3 other dogs. But then I reached out to Dana and that one text changed everything. Immediately they put me in touch with Tess, the trainer & she listened to my endless concerns, gave me great advice, was so patient when I bothered her all weekend!! Dana was equally amazing, keeping in touch with me daily making sure I had all the resources I needed. They have done everything possible to ensure a positive outcome for Kylo and myself.

Now, I have a beautiful GSD boy who is 100% housebroken, plays ever so gentle with all the other dogs, loves to learn and knows several commands already, has ZERO aggression towards the other dogs and never had any aggression towards humans. We still have a ways to go but I can see the light, he desperately wants to be a good boy and please you, he just needed someone to show him how. He was not the type of dog you see and immediately fall in love with, he wasn’t that cute little puppy; but he is that forever love, the one that grows and grows in your heart. Now that he is finally just being a puppy & exploring, I can see his personality and he is such a clumsy goof, lol. And smart… he is one the smartest GSD I’ve owned if not the smartest. Mental stimulation is far more important to him than physical.

I have adopted and rescued many GSD before but never one as traumatized as he was. I refused to be another human who let him down. But this WOULD NOT have been possible without all the support from the Oconee Humane Society!! I have never worked with such an amazing group of people who truly care about the dogs in their care. So, look on their site for your next dog, MAKE THE DRIVE if you have to, trust me… you will not regret it!!

Needed some food for my K-9. TIMES are really hard. But very grateful that the Humane Society was able to help. Mack was definitely Happy!

They work so hard here to help combat the selfishness of people who refuse to spay and neuter cats and dogs. THEY WILL HELP YOU GET PETS NEUTERED IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD IT! Staff is kind, shelter is clean, and they seem to love and care for those fur balls who don't have - but deserve - loving homes.

Took my dog Cinnamon to be spayed... very nice people.. even finished before time and allowed me to pick her up early

Wonderful animal adoption service. Clean. Very informed staff. The best shelter I have been to. I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking for a new furry family member. We just adopted little Trooper after a short fostering period. White Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix. Go online and make an appointment to visit with all the wonderful fur babies. You definitely won't regret it.

I just adopted my new "baby" Cammie from here. I was so surprised I was able to do application, and all the different things in order to make sure she and I would be a great fit (and so they could make sure she was going to good home) as quickly, yet thoroughly.
I brought her home that day, and they also sent her with a dog bed, bag of dog food, dog treats and 3 toys, and wormer and antibiotics to finish out her kennel cough medicine.
The people that work here are wonderful and the volunteers are a godsend! You can truly tell everyone here adores all the animals here! Pics of my baby Cammie (they named her that at shelter, which I do call her that, but her new full, name is now Chamomile Sue Fey!

Got my rescue pup from here! The staff were all so kind and helpful!! Gifted us with a lot of start up gear (leash, collar, toys, treats)! They really took the time to help us find the perfect fit for our family and she's a happy little trail dog 🐶

I adopted a cat on 9/15 and the staff and volunteers were all super nice and helpful!

Well organized, knowledgeable and friendly staff who are devoted to their important mission of placing homeless animals in great forever homes. We adopted our new doggo from them and she came with all of her shots and was microchipped, healthy and happy.

Dedicated volunteers and staff help these animals. We've adopted and fostered doggos from here, and their live for the animals is apparent.

I adopted 2 brother cats from OHS in Aug & they were so bonded & loving. Dice has been missing 5 weeks now & Jasper misses him just like I do. I appreciate animal control helping me look for him. I've had cats all my life & I'm glad I have Jasper & pray Dice turns up somewhere.

We love an support the humane society.they do lots of good for lots of people. They make sure to accommodate the unfortunate that cannot 🙂 afford necklaces( collars🙂)
I ALWAYS see 🙈 volunteers walking the dogs, 🐶, and I cannot say anything bad, the manager, was short towards me one day, but then I thought to myself, " What could she be going through?" 🙌
" Is she stressed out?"
" Are the inmates non compliant?"
So I offered her a word of encouragement, instead of judging her.

My dog was "incarcerated"😁 in this facility for the weekend. The people I dealt with to secure her release were friendly and very informative. The facility was clean and my girl was well cared for.

Love them. Always looking out for the animals and their best interests. Their community programs are the best.

My wife and I have several scholarships in the community College level and The College of Veterinary Science at VA Tech. We want to help in any way possible. We have digs and horses. We had cats, chickens and 🫏 . We love all animals and want to help all animals.
