Good vibes only at TMax-n-Topo 's. If you are a seasoned hostel-stayer or it's your first time, you won't be disappointed.

There are also private rooms available, but either way, you should visit the living room to share a story or two with the interesting individuals who frequent the place.

The owner, David, is so friendly and keeps the hostel clean and in great condition. We will be back as soon as we can!

Stayed at Topo’s past 2 nights. Up to work with the 46ers on Adopt-A-Highway.
Perfect spot. Clean comfortable.
Look forward to staying again.

Great atmosphere, Topofgothics himself gives you the grand tour of the place. Amenities for anyone and a well-stocked canteen let you keep your budget low, but if you want to take the hike to Lake Placid for something more substantial it's not too difficult either. Price is on par with other hiker hostels I've stayed at and the facilities are great by comparison. I'd definitely return next time I find myself in that part of the High Peaks.

The host is very welcoming and it's nice to stay here more than 4 times each time I went to the Adirondacks with my boyfriend.

Really great and affordable place to stay, especially for hikers and skiers. Excellent kitchen for all to use and a good community atmosphere. The owner is really nice and keeps things very clean. The only time you might not get a quick phone/email reply is the occasional day when the owner is out hiking (which I think is a good thing!)

Stayed while Jack was our host. He's very knowledgeable about all the peaks and an all around great person. All the other guests were very friendly and considerate and I enjoyed swapping stories and getting to know all of them.

Our group shared a bunk room. Exceptionally clean and well serviced with awesome showers and lockers for rental should your gear spill over into your neighbours' space. The type of place where, thanks in no small part to the owners, you feel instantly at home. Just what you need after a long drive and/or a great day out tramping the hills. Wealth of information and advice available for first timers like me!

The hostel is very affordable, pretty comfortable, and has nice amenities for the price. The owners are very friendly and helpful with hiking and skiing advice. The other patrons were also fun to hang out and share stories with, but your mileage may vary... There was a little slip up with my billing, but Dave recognized his mistake as soon as I mentioned it, and he corrected it quickly with a wonderful apology and explanation. I'll definitely be back!

It’s great. Location, cleanliness, comfort, convenience and price are all very good. As far as I’m aware it’s the only hostel in the area and the hotels around all tend to be quite expensive, so it’s great that it makes this beautiful area much more accessible on a budget.

Great hostel, amazing vibes, hiker's favorite. Overall David, the owner, is a wonderful person. Everyone felt at ease and at home at this hostel. I have stayed in several, there are many hostels with similar or maybe better facility, but what sets this hostel apart is the personal touch David and his wife have given to this place. Felt comfortable at the end of day after a tiring hike. Highly recommended.

I have been biking to this area from downstate for years during foliage and this hostel always makes for a good homebase when hiking the High Peaks. Clean rooms, large kitchen, a guitar I always enjoy playing. Never met the owners but managers Gail and Mar were both very sweet. All the guests are friendly (some are quirkier than others haha). Most are hardcore hikers with good info on trails. Also extensive library. For 35/night! Much better option than expensive hotels in Lake Placid full of boring tennis shoe wearing townies shuffling about all the horrid tourist traps there.

Reasonable priced and friendly owners. Large kitchen and deck to spread out. Meet fun people with similar love of the outdoors. Good location to Saranac Lake, Lake Placid and the high peaks. Recommended for people on a budget. Probate rooms available and 3 showers for sharing. 4 bunk rooms with different number of beds.

This was my second stay in September (the first was in May) and I’m enjoying it more with each stay. I tend to prefer the quiet hours when few people are out and about, and I was lucky enough to get the huge kitchen to myself to prepare my meals and kick back with a beer one afternoon. I loved the hot showers with excellent water pressure, the long beds (given that I’m tall, this is a huge comfort factor) supportive mattresses, and quiet and respectful dorm guests. We’re all basically hikers, so most go to bed pretty early to wake up early, too. This is a fantastic home base for tons of Adirondack hikes, and I’ll certainly be back.

Hands down one of the best hostels in the USA.

Let new tell you why:

The owner is very knowledgable, helpful, and sharing.

They have a fantastic kitchen (with a community food pantry box)

Hot and pressured showers ($5 if you are not staying there and just want to clan up after camping/hiking for a while)

Fire pit, hug deck, plenty of space with books, games, lounge area. Very thought out and welcoming space.

Huge fan of this place! Like all good hostels, it definitely has both character and cleanliness in equal measures. TMax and Topo's is a great place for any hikers or visitors to the Adirondacks, and has everything you might need at a very convenient location. I'm glad to have stayed here, and I will definitely be back!

If I could give this place 500 stars I would. I have stayed here about a dozen times by now over the past 3 years or so. I feel bad it's taken me until now to write a review. I have gone to a lot of different places and stayed in a lot of different venues (homes, hotels, campgrounds, etc.), but this place is by far the best. At this point I consider it a home away from home. It is my base camp for all of my adventures in the Adirondacks! The owners are some of the nicest people I have ever met. They are extremely hospitable hosts. The hostel is very cozy, welcoming, and a short 5 minute drive to downtown Lake Placid and only about 10-15 minutes from the Adirondack Loj, which is a location with trails to access many of the high peaks. I cannot say enough great things about Tmax 'n' Topo's. At the end of a long day of hiking, skiing, or whatever else you can count on coming back to the best base camp ever! The owner's are wealth of knowledge about the Adirondacks and they love to hear about the adventures of their guests. This place is truly the best and I always count down the days until I get to go back!

I was on my way to camp at the loj, but it was so cold, I saw the sign for the hostel and went in, the owner gave me a tour and went over all the rules of the place. He was also very helpful and telling me the procedures for getting to the Mount Marcy parking lot and trailhead and different look out points on the hike. Nice clean comfortable beds, bathrooms, a big kitchen and a nice library with sofas and books. We even had a bonus and had a bear in the parking lot!

Great place for a hostel. Nothing fancy, great price. Bunks are comfortable. Towels provided for showers. Access to full kitchen. Lots of parking.
If you want to meet hikers, this is the place! Owners are friendly 46rs and most guests are hikers.

Very cozy, super clean, warm and comfortable beds, was surprised by kitchen facilities. Reasonable Covid safety.
Had a nice chat with the owner who instead of complaining about the expense, seemed happy that the new air filters installed to counter Covid, were also good for flu viruses. You can tell the owners put a lot of love into their business.
