Kern County Building Inspection

I was a little worried to come here based on the google reviews but I was pleasantly surprised. I needed information on a property and the front desk staff was quick and polite. I was later seen by Ron in code compliance and he was friendly and knowledgeable. He answered all my questions and gave me Lillian’s contact info who was overseeing this particular property case. Lillian answered immediately and was also knowledgeable and polite. I had a good experience here!

This is the very first time we have done in the county of Bakersfield. My wife does all the paper work for me while i'm out in the field working with my crew. My wife mentioned to me that the Lady Elenor was very pleasant, and helpful to her with the permit application process. On the other side. I had the pleasure of meeting and talking in person with the field Building Inspector. I really nice and fair Man. explained everything clearly to make the insection go smoothly. we used the county disposal site and the Ladies were very nice to help. Thank you Bakersfield.

Went in today to get some information on something I needed. The wait time wasn't bad at all. I came in around 3 pm. The lady that helped me was kinda nice, helped me as much as she could, but she did have that resting face syndrome.

One of the absolute worst AHJ’s in all of California. These folks won’t give you an inspection window and expect you to wait all day from 8-5 for a 30 minute inspection. Their inspectors regularly no snow inspections or show up hours late. They need new management. Spend some time with some other AHJ’s learn how to properly set an inspection schedule and learn how to give out 3 hour time windows like every other AHJ across the state does. It’s not hard. You also need to learn how to reach out to people waiting on your inspectors when you’re they’re going to be late! I’ve had guys wait over 9 hours for their inspections only to be No showed. GET IT TOGETHER! You work for the tax payers!

Staff at county is great !!! And I appreciate all of their hard work I really do.
However, I don’t know who’s in charge of the way things are done. We deal with the city and county daily
City online is simple and can get permits in 5 minutes. County online is an absolute joke
I don’t even try anymore because still have to fill out paper either electronically or by hand, and then resubmit into the system. And apparently I don’t have the right program I have to download a new program to be able to submit it correctly or they won’t accept it.
Besides that, even when you do it online, the program always fails and you have to call just to make a payment over the phone. It’s just a hassle. so I go in person.

I’m sorry .. I waste more time filling out paperwork that is repetitive. 😫
We’ve been doing work for 25 years in Kern County and they still don’t know who we are. I have to fill out my name and business phone number address, email etc. etc. four different pages. How is it not in the system by now.
Same information over and over.
Work we plan on doing is 4 pages then, four pages of work that is completed of the same exact information. Completely unnecessary. And unfortunately, a waste of trees .

We are required to bring ladder for a random show up time so have to waste our time and workers to set up… Worry about ladders getting stolen because we can’t meet Inspectors whenever they come ..don’t always call it’s a 50-50 chance. we have had multiple ladders stolen.
City will still bring their own ladder and we don’t have to meet them.
The city also provides a venting chart, County does not. We have to use the cities venting chart to fill out the counties, venting code.
We do a lot of very small jobs and I spend at least 2 hours a week filling out paperwork. That doesn’t count the time I have to go down to the county.
I really wish whoever’s in charge could figure out what the city is doing and do something similar.

Either way, there has to be someway to make this system better…

If i could give zero stars i would. Why is it that any government run entity is a joke. If it were a private enterprise they would be out of business in no time. Any time you go into the county office you wait, and wait, then you get called and wait more. The staff is rude, they do not want to help you. Any question you ask them is just such a burden on their lives. I waste more time in this place then any other place i do business with. Dont even bother with their online permit application. Its just about as big a joke as going in there and dealing with them in person. Stuck with them though. No way around them. Rant over

The home I'm renting has multiple code violations that the landlord is ignoring which is preventing work from being done on energy assistance programs. I've been dealing with rodents and plumbing issues yet this office can't be bothered to respond to my emails when I fulfill this office's requirements to get involved. I'm going to try going in person to see about getting an inspector out to my property to do an inspection but after this hassle I don't have much hope.

Can’t get no body to tell me what kind of permit do I need … so I can put a shed 18x60 … does anybody out there know , what kind of permit do I need ?

Most of the inspectors don't know what they're talking about. What a joke
