Idaho State Tax Commission

I have not had much interaction with this organization and I rarely write reviews but I feel that praise is due here.

A new law requested that an estimated tax payment be made by Dec 31st under Affected Business Entity for the current tax year back in 2021. I went onto the portal to make this payment and failed to notice that it was applying the payment to our individual taxes. When returns were filed the tax commission didn't allow my payment as the error wasn't found in time. I found this information out during an appeals process that was handled by Zachary Haynes in the appeals department. I had to pay penalties and fees of almost $1000.oo on this payment that I thought had been handled.

After finding this out, I of course had to worry about the payment that I had posted on their portal for 2022 taxes and knew it was going to happen again.

Zachary had closed my previous case but I took a chance on emailing him through the appeals email thread, and asked him if he could assist me. He pushed the payment inquiry through to the accounting department and had them apply it to my ABE, so I wouldn't face penalties again, and the account would be as I intended it to be.

I very much appreciated his help both in explaining the appeals process to me and for his help in this matter without me having to file a new appeal.

Wow! After reading the reviews, I was expecting a horrible experience. I, too, had first tried the phone and gave up when the wait was going to be 45 minutes. I decided to go in person to the Chinden Blvd office, and was very pleasantly surprised. I was the only one there, so was helped immediately. The gentleman on duty was polite and friendly. He explained why there was a delay in processing my return--too few processors in the office and mathematical mistakes on my part which requires them to hand process my return. He also explained what to expect at this point.

If you need help from these folks, and you live in the Treasure Valley, I highly recommend going in to the office if at all possible. It was a very positive experience.

The campus for the Tax Commission is beautiful. There are ponds, paths to walk on and lots of wildlife. I love going for a walk and taking pictures there. An older gentleman helped me and he was great! Gave me all the info I needed and told me the easy way to do what I needed with out the run around.

While most people are motivated to write reviews to express their dissatisfaction, I think the Idaho State Tax Commission needs someone to write about the organization when they have done well. My review is simply that. I had a client/contact with a problem. I contacted the ISTC for a second look. The response was immediate, and with a solution, but grace was added. Once I learned the rest of the story, it was clear my client/contact was being assessed correctly, and within the statute. However, my inquiry and the solution was met with grace. Grace from a government entity should never be expected. But, I watched a state entity give it. The people who work at the tax commission may be your neighbor and/or your friend. Clearly, like you, they have a job to do. More so, a job I would never choose. So, think of that first, before you contact them. Expect the process to fit the statute of the state. But, if you get grace, that person took a risk to help you. This is what you might get in Idaho, if you approach the situation gracefully.

I hate everything about doing paperwork and figuring taxes. It gives me SO MUCH STRESS. But every time I've needed information, or have had to fix an error, the people here have always been super helpful and friendly. It's amazing how nice they are, especially considering how stressed out the people they're dealing with usually are. (I'm talking about ME.) I appreciate them A LOT. <3

My auto dealership collect sales tax from Idaho consumers for cars, and we pay the tax commission monthly. The tax commission has the tough role collecting money for the state - but the people working there are always helpful when I have a question; they've been great to work with since we opened in 2006. A lot of government bureaucracies are extremely hard to work with - this one is way above average. I just called with a question about a sales tax credit and a human was on the phone with me in less than a minute and the question was answered almost immediately. I value that efficiency.

Even through this unprecedented pandemic, the lady whom I spoke to was so polite and helpful ❤. I was ready for shortness lol and wouldn't have blamed anyone one bit, but she surprised me with kindness. Thank you so much for that!
