Western Maryland Scenic Railroad

I keep seeing mixed reviews and I feel like it’s very normal for people to only take the time to leave a review when they have something negative to say. But I was nervous taking the trip for this after seeing so many negative reviews. SO I wanted to get on here and say that my kids had the BEST time! The staff was wonderful and friendly and we rode the steam engine and it was amazing! Santa was so fun and my girls each got a bell. My husband I got one also! The hot cocoa was yummy. They had a conductor walking through the train cars and it really felt like we were on a night ride through the northern wilderness. It’s worth it! Not to mention. The town is ADORABLE if you have any time to stay and explore. It looks like a Christmas Card!

My husband and I took our 6 and 9 year olds for the Polar Express ride and it was great! We chose the table car and it was perfect to enjoy our hot chocolate. The staff was friendly and great with the kids. Polar Express music played, the book was read, Santa stopped by and took a picture and the train car sang Christmas carols together. Overall a great experience!

An absolute fun weekend on the WMSR Cumberland to Frostburg with my family. The crew were courteous and hospitable during the trip. Will definitely tell my friends and relatives about our awesome experience. Will do this again in the summer. Thank you WMSR!!!

Went on The Polar Express and loved it! Great for kids but enjoyable for adults too. The hot chocolate and cookie was delicious and the staff were awesome!!!! Would highly recommend and we plan on going back next year.

We thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end! The Cumberland station is easy to navigate and parking was convenient. The train ride was wonderful! I'd suggest to sit on the side closest to the station, for best views, if possible. Autumn was in full bloom (on 10/21), and the sights were breathtaking! Frostburg station was very nice also. There is a steep walk (up several stairs and then up a hill) to get to most of the shops in Frostburg, but if that isn't doable, the shops and museum on the same level as the station will definitely suffice for 90 minutes. We loved everything about this adventure and will be back again!

Great for family in friends! We rode in car 840 (table car) The performers were wonderful and great with the Littles. PLEASE TIP PERFORMERS they VOLUNTEER to serve you hot cocoa, a show, read a book, dance sing and stay engaged with the family throughout the experience. Highly suggest. Would attend again.

We had an amazing time riding the polar express. It was very fun meeting new people from other parts of the states. The performers did a great job!

The crew was amazing, well trained, EXTREMELY well experienced.
Getting to not only SEE a mammoth Steam locomotive in action but to also OPERATE the controls and Pull the whistle was truly incredible!
11/10! Hope to visit again !

We had the best time on the Polar Express! I was a little concerned on if it would be worth it to drive two hours to Cumberland for the ride, but boy am I glad we did! The town was really cute, we ate at the crabby pig, which was delicious! We then walked over to the train station, took some pictures in front of the beautiful Christmas tree and some of the Christmas decorations. They have set up out front before going in to get our golden tickets and aboard the polar express! I highly recommend it. It was the perfect amount of time and a beautiful ride.

My wife took me on the scenic train ride for my 60th birthday. I had never been on a train of any kind. I was so excited and the excursion did not disappoint. We chose the open car which was very enjoyable since it was a picture perfect day. Might not be a good idea if rain is in the forecast but definitely a good idea if there is no rain due. I plan to try one of the dinner rides next. I would suggest to bring your own food on the open car. The hot dogs we purchased left a lot to be desired. But overall this was a great experience for a very fair price.

My husband and I brought our grandchildren to ride the train. They are 2 and 6 yrs old and love trains. They absolutely loved the train ride. The Conductor moved us to seats that had a full window for them to look out as our original seats only had part of the window to see out of. They gave information about certain key places along the route. All the staff was friendly, the train was clean. We really enjoyed ourselves.

We choose this trip because we love trains. We were hoping for the old historical steam engine, but got the diesel, but it was still a great trip. Very nice ride, with pretty fall colors.

This was a great experience, and I highly recommend it. The train's staff was polite, helpful, and charming... the food served in the dining car was terrific and loved the atmosphere there.

The train ride was everything we expected. The conductor was able to find us and several others seats that had a full window instead of the ones we originally had that did not have a full window view. The entire staff was very considerate and helpful.

Our family had a wonderful time on the Polar Express train this year and were so impressed with the effort made by Western MD Scenic Railroad to make it a special experience - from the golden tickets, to the costumes, hot chocolate, music, lighting, and service. The staff were fantastic, helpful, and engaged in all of their roles; the conductor was particularly notable. We will be back!

We had a wonderful excursion on the railroad traveling from Cumberland to Frostburg and back. I highly recommend the observation car as it was very comfortable and offered a great view of the Maryland countryside. We were also able to go downstairs in the car to a lounge area to escape the sun from time-to-time. I did try the open car for about 30 minutes; however, with the heat and humidity and diesel fumes, I'm glad we had signed up for the observation car. The railroad staff were friendly and helpful with any questions we had. The only nit on the entire excursion involved getting on and off the train. My wife has significant mobility issues and needed help with using the metal boarding stool. The staff was reluctant to offer any help or encouragement to her in boarding or in getting off the train. We did okay on our own; however, we would have been much happier if assistance had been offered. A concern over liability issues may have been part of the problem.

We had a great time on the Polar Express; our kids had a blast singing along and following the book and characters; grandma enjoyed watching the kids have fun, a good time was had by all. They thoroughly enjoyed the cookies and cocoa and the condensation from so many kids breathing and singing in the car definitely added to the magic of looking out the foggy windows on their way to the North Pole.

My experience was fantastic and I really enjoyed the trip it was very scenic as the name implies I loved the open air car and the weather was perfect. And Frostburg was beautiful it was interesting to watch them turn that locomotive on the turntable. And 558 was beautifully restored locomotive. I will definitely do this again

The Hands On The Throttle experience was amazing! I learned so much about the mechanics of how #1309 works, plus had the chance to drive.

The folks at WSMR are first class. I enjoy every experience I’ve had there!

We just spent Sunday afternoon on the frostburg flyer in the lounge class car. It was very comfortable and the drinks were good. We had a good time met some nice people. We walked up into frostburg saw some neat little shops and had brunch (really could have used some more time) went back to the train and went back. We would do it again.
