I use to be a a student at GEMS for 2 years and i will say to be honest that it is a great school the teachers are good teachers well not all of them most of them. I left GEMS to move to Florida and the school i go to now it
is terrible it is a magnet school they are racist and disrespectful, they are way to strict they suspend you for the smallest stupidest things and give you way to much work but besides that GEMS is great and she be appreciated trust me because i would do anything to go back there. so if i was a parent with child i would enroll my child there

My boys have never been happier or more interested in learning. The focus of being a good citizen, learned through interactive experiences with others from around the world, creates excellent self-awareness which is important in this current global climate. It was awarded "Magnet School of Distinction" by Magnet Schools of America. I have always found the staff to be receptive to my requests or comments—always willing to speak with me. They have been an excellent partner in my children's education. There are some really wonderful benefits, including world travel and opportunities to receive several college credits before graduation (reducing post-secondary costs substantially). I only wish I had discovered GEMS when my boys were in 6th grade!

I have been here for 6 years now and I really like this school. I have been here since 6th grade. I really recommend this school , it has its faults but so does every school.

GEMS is a school that I wouldn't recommend to anyone. The teachers hardly ever do their jobs. Everyone is so wrapped up into everyone being treated fairly that they forget we're in school for an education. It's a hard task for students to get their work done but its even harder for the teachers to grade and check the work properly. The principal is awful, he hears no one out. He makes changes throughout the school year which highly affects the students.

Global Experience Magnet School (GEMS). As a student of this "school", I feel compelled to give my honest opinion about what I've endured here, and maybe that'll give you insight on what to expect if you decide to bring your children here.

First off, the teachers and staff. Some teachers and staff here show obvious passion for their jobs and that's not a problem to me. The problem I have is that they're so focused on their jobs that they leave some students behind. Those who are failing get no attention from teachers. Nobody says anything about them, nobody helps them, they just let them fail. Maybe they'll get a parent phone call or a small talk from the counselor or the Dean of Students, but other than that, your student is on their own.

Sometimes the staff can be quite rude but to be honest, the students can sometimes be rude as well so that's somewhat understandable. However, it seems like the staff at GEMS have no training in being sympathetic towards students.

As the principal will mention, you have an opportunity as a senior to leave early in order to attend classes at Capital Community College (or to go to work). If you're not doing well in a class, you lose that opportunity and have to stay all day in "senior supervision." That's fine. What makes me furious is the fact that students often don't attend senior supervision upon requests to do so and without punishments given; students still don't get any help even though we, collectively, are struggling with our work. Even if we ask for help, oftentimes, we're left even more confused.

A couple of positive things about GEMS is its big message of "knowing, caring and doing" regarding your community and the world around you. Speaking of "world", we have a variety of field trips to different states and countries all around the world. Several examples include South Africa, Washington D.C., China, Atlanta, and France. If you're willing to pay $200-800 for your child to go on these trips, then you'll definitely want to check this school out.

There are a lack of recreational activities and "public" clubs at school. There's a quarterly club called GEMS Society that rewards students that have excellent grades in their class for that quarter, but that's more of an exclusive club. There are clubs that spawn sporadically but even those clubs can be exclusive.

There are no sports here. With the lack of a proper gym, students are expected to do P.E. activities outside on a basketball court immediately next to a parking lot. In the winter, students do activities in the basement.

Recently, there has been rumors that we've had a shortage of printer paper. These are rumors and I have no idea whether or not this is true, so I will not go in depth on that.

There are rats/mice in this school which I've, as well as my classmates have witnessed for ourselves. It's not an infestation, per se, but keep in mind that you might see a mouse or two when you have your student attend GEMS.

School dances (excluding prom) are usually held in the cafeteria.

We have no auditorium so all assemblies are held in the cafeteria.

You may want to make your kids lunches if they're going to attend GEMS since the lunch staff takes a long time preparing the food for students, and there was one instance that students had to wait around 20 minutes for the food to be prepared, which is outrageous.

The school is small, and is usually made fun of by students of the neighboring school, Metropolitan Learning Center.

In conclusion, this school isn't hell. The trips are really fun and good memories can be made from this school due to its small size. However, when it comes to quality of education, sports and recreation teacher/staff conduct, and lunches, you may want to search for another school if possible.

This is my honest opinion, and if someone that goes to GEMS has a differing opinion, more power to you.

No sports teams and the school is the size of a household closet there's like 5 kids in a grade. Art and tech and gym isn't fun, and they don't even have a gym. World Language isn't good and school lunch is disgusting MLC always makes fun of us. Go if you want but, once you go to GEMS there ain't no going back

Just no. I don't recommend this school to anyone some of the staff are nice but others don't take the time to listen to their students. They don't know how to prevent their middle school students from getting into fights
