South of Summit Taqueria & Tequila

I have lived in the area for 8 years, but I have never visited south of Summit before. Each of my three tacos was incredible. I had the fish, the mushroom, and the chicken. Not only were they loaded, but they were delicious. And their chips just might be the best of any place I've been in Kansas City

If you’re a Waldo resident, this should be in your normal rotation. As a vegetarian, I greatly appreciate their veggie options. I’ve always been thoroughly pleased with my meal and all the drinks I’ve tried. I would even make the drive here if it wasn’t in my neighborhood.

Dined at South of Summit for the first time over the weekend and I cannot say enough how cute this place is! The decor is absolutely on point and invites you in as soon as you step through the door. We were greeted with the smell of freshly made churros so that really was enticing. From the seemless color palettes to the velvet chairs, and hidden trinkets on the walls you'll feel like you're in the Southwest during your time here. My partner and I enjoyed a couple types of tequila shots and house margaritas to go with our chips, salsa, and queso to start. The margaritas are fresh to order and made with that special authentic taste! We liked the salsa as well. The chips and queso while fresh aren't anything super special but it helped settle our hunger for sure while waiting for our main course.

The menu has a decent variety and I liked the unique taco options like the cheese curd taco. My partner and I tried the cheese curd taco, the boca beef taco, shrimp taco, and fish taco. The only critique I have is all of the tacos have relatively the same toppings so there isn't much of a difference in flavor profiles aside from the protein choice. While they were flavorful I would suggest switching up the toppings between each so they stand out a bit more! Overall we enjoyed everything we had and could not stop talking about the vibe and decor. Our server was also absolutely fantastic and very friendly so I appreciate the tentativeness! We will certainly be back for happy hour specials again.

So lucky to have attended the soft opening of this new spot from the owners of summit grill! This is such a fun addition to the neighborhood. The atmosphere is super cozy and the overhead lights give it a festive outdoor patio feel. Started out with their take on a Paloma which was tart and we'll balanced with it's spicy rim. One of our party gave the margarita high marks.
Warm chips arrived with a really tasty, not so spicy salsa and on the table was an array of 4 salsas in varying degrees of heat. All were full of flavor and we had a hard time picking favorites.
We had to give the classic queso a try and it was a great representation of what cheese dip always wanted to be. Rich and buttery with a little crisp onion and cilantro on top!
We ordered all the tacos between us and we all had empty plates at the end! everything was so fresh, and the Al pastor was shaved fresh off a spit as it should be!
The sides were equally tasty. The elote was a standout-with just a hint of smokiness.
We finished up the meal with the tres leches cake. Perfect finish, not too sweet and so cinamonny (not a word?)
Looking forward to another visit soon!

As a seasoned margarita-drinker and salsa-eater, I can say SOS is top notch. The salsa is so fresh every time and the chips are perfectly flakey without breaking into a million pieces.I can’t say enough about my love for SOS- I visit at least twice a month. Best happy hour in the area. $4 margs, $3 queso, $2 babacoa foldies (fire). We’ve also had some awesome servers over the years. A good place to be a regular!

Yummy churros with choc dipping sauce (dont judge my dinner!), coconut hibiscus 🌺 & strawberry 🍓 margaritas, belly filling chips & salsa 💃🏽 & Al pastor tacos. Cute ambiance, fast & attentive waiter. Plenty of room for COVID spacing!

First time at South of Summit and LOVED IT. Drinks were great, pictured are the prickly pear margarita and a red wine sangria, both were absolutely delicious. The queso and salsa were a bit average, but the tacos were phenemonal. I really enjoyed the chorizo, egg, and potato taco as well as the carne asada. The wife was all in on the blackened shrimp taco. Cheese curd taco was good, but it couldn't reach the high bar set by the more traditional mexican flavors. On top of the delicious food and drinks it has a great, small restaurant atmosphere. Also felt decently priced as I only spent about 50$ for appetizer, drinks, and two meals. Will definitely be going back.

First time in, came for happy hour, but stayed later for dessert. Drinks were good, staff friendly, the tacos were great! The prickly pear margarita is my new favorite..

Went later (8pm) on a Tuesday or Wednesday and there weren't a ton of people, but the whole block seemed slow that night. Service was spectacular! Joe (I think 🤔) took amazing care of us. Ask about their other salsas, I'm fairly certain the one that comes with the chips is their mild, it's great, but I like a bit more heat. They have a green one and a super delicious red smoky one that are much hotter and better IMHO. The pastor is fire (marinated pork, there are no preachers here). The queso is legit and the price point is better than alright. This one checks ALL the boxes for me we will definitely be back.

Got dinner here with friends on Tuesday and had a great experience! The tacos, chips and salsa, and price were all great, will definitely be coming back again!

Great warm and inviting decor and vibe, good food (homemade corn tortilla was on point) and great happy hour that’s focused on beers and margs and the excellent dips on the food side. I’ll be back soon. I do wish they had a little bar but that’s no big deal.

Great birria burrito and tacos. Very fresh guac and salsa. Sorta weak happy hour margs however. Overall great experience, will come back!

My most favorite margaritas- their happy hour is amazing too! I also love all of their tacos. So amazing. 10/10. It helps that it’s absolutely adorable!

Our server Jamel was amazing! Very personable and efficient, and the food was excellent. I had a barbacoa taco that was tender, flavorful and juicy along with the cheese curd taco that was equally impressive. My partner had the carne asada and the chicken tinga and thoroughly enjoyed them as well! We finished up with the churros and ice cream and were blown away. I'm glad we stopped in and I can't wait to come back again soon!

We went here to celebrate my brother's birthday. It's such a fun little spot. They don't have a lot of seating and they don't take reservations so plan accordingly. But the food, service and drinks were outstanding. I highly recommend the Tequila Old Fashioned. Excellent!

Great addition to Waldo. The tacos, queso, elote were all excellent. $4 margs 3-6 every day.

Been coming here for years! Al pastor tacos are always good and my server alieen was great!! Give her a raise!!

Took my wife and two teenage daughters for dinner and we all enjoyed the food. My pastor taco was excellent, pastor was spot on just like in Mexico. All the other tacos were good, as was the burrito, corn, and guacamole. My “SoS” or house margarita was very tasty. Service was good as well. Everyone left happy and we’ll be back.

One note, they give you a bucket of chips, but then only a little 2-3oz portion cup of their delicious salsa, which was gone in 20 seconds. When you request more, you get another little serving. I would rather pay $5 for chips and big bowl of salsa, like 12oz, especially for four people. Ditch the tiny portion cups.

If you like Brookside Barrio & Port Fonda type Mexican, you’ll like this place too.

My fiancé and I come here at least once a week. It’s our favorite place in Waldo to come for good food, good drinks (margs are to die for), and good vibes. We also bring our friends/family here and they’re always impressed. Surprised by some of the reviews because we come here ALL the time and it’s always a great experience.
