Freda's Cafe

Today I saw the Google reviews & decided to give this place a try. I didn't realize I would need a reservation on a Monday night, but I did. The waitress was so nice. She told me to come back in 1 1/2 hours & I would get a table, no need to reserve. Even though it was still busy, she kept her word. They did have a note on their door during the day asking customers to be patient because they can't get enough help. Though this was the case, the quality of the food didn't suffer. The lamb chops were superb! My waitress was great. Just be patient & understanding of their situation & you won't be disappointed. Michelin grade food, hands-down!

Freda's Cafe is great culinary experience. That is one of the best I have had in Cape May, county. The name cafe is a great way to hide a special dinning experience. The decor fits with the s cape may. Style and building it hides in.

The price was well matched to the chefs skillfully designed menu, is the start of gourmet experience. The seafood bisque was fresh and savory. The appetizers were some thing to experience. If you have the time sneak in to Freda and don't blab about a hidden gourmet experience. Like me

What a wonderful find! November night, well into the 60's, and we wanted to sit outside. Found Freda's Cafe with a large heat lamp warming the 4 outdoor tables. We ordered the duck and the grouper (duck was amazing, grouper was ok, but the fish came with crabcakes that more than made-up for the mediocre fish). Flossy, our server was exceptional, which made the food and ambiance that much better. Save room for coffee & dessert (we chose the Bread Pudding).

We ate here as a large party of 7. The portions are decent but the taste of all the dishes were delicious. It's a little pricy, with each dish costing between $30~$40, but it's BYOB which might make off for it.

A best kept secret in cape may! Every part of the meal was to die for. I enjoyed a stuffed salmon off the specials menu for my entrée. Cooked to perfection. Finished off the evening with a flourless cake that melted in my mouth.

We had a wonderful dinner at Freda's. Somehow this restaurant fell off of our radar and we hadn't dined here since before the pandemic. Freda's is a single room restaurant, so it is small and intimate. This is a BYOB establishment so you can bring your own wine/libation and save on liquor costs. That said, we found the price points to be very fair particularly in light of the quality meal and service we received. The staff seems to be long-time employees versus transitional workers, and they are vested in the restaurant's success and your dining enjoyment. We had absolutely wonderful shrimp dumplings (shumai type) that were very memorable - we can't remember having better. The seafood soup was delicious as well. Bread was served with the appetizers and your meal as well as a nice side salad - both of which were nice added touches. Our dinner entrees (which were in the low $40 range) were cooked to perfection. We enjoyed the filet and rack of lamb each of which was accompanied by delicious sauces and vegetables. We didn't have room for dessert. We were delighted when some neighbors were seated next to us and they raved that Freda's is their "go to" Cape May restaurant. We clearly understand why. We will be returning on our own. Definitely worth trying.

After visiting Cape May for many years, we finally discovered Freda’s. What a gem! Service was warm, friendly and so personable. The food was way above and beyond our expectations. Rack of lamb was cooked perfectly and expertly seasoned. The beef Wellington was fantastic. Tender, tasty and perfectly cooked. The ambiance was surely somewhere between kitschy/retro/80’s but still cozy. It didn’t really matter since food is so great. We will definitely be back here.

Been going to Cape May for 25 years. This is the first year. I’ve been to Freda’s on the recommendation of a friend, although it is on the side street and doesn’t get as much traffic as the main mall, the minute we walked in we were warmly greeted by our server, Eddie, and treated to an evening of elegant and Upscale delicious food. Because it’s BYOB, we were able to bring a delicious bottle of white wine to enjoy throughout the meal. We ordered shumai as a starter to share. Each one was tender filled with seafood and the accompaniments were delicious. Then we ordered their special crabcakes. These were not typical crabcakes loaded with breading for stuffing these crabcakes were filled to the brim with big white pieces of lump crab cake sweetened by a mango Sauce at the bottom served over mashed potatoes with asparagus. I feel like I found a gem in Cape May and an alternative to all the old standards. I would clean up the place and do a little marketing to make it a little bit more modern but otherwise I wouldn’t change a thing.

Great experience, beautiful design, the food is delish...the entree are incredible ...save room for dessert ... the bread pudding in Devine!

Great place, delicious food, great service! Feels like a homemade, definitely one of the best spots for the dinner in Cape May.

We were here for dinner this past friday evening. First the place is small and intimate so if you like that sort of thing than Fredas is for you. Now I've read some reviews about slow service, honestly we didnt find that at all. Arielle our server was friendly professional and attentive. Next the food....Fantastic!!!! Wow we were both( my wife and myself) extremely pleased with our meals. We started with the spring rolls for an app and had the crab cakes and lamb chops respectively for our entrees. Both meals were simply....DELICIOUS!!!! I would highly recommend Freda's Cafe.

We celebrated a 50th Wedding Anniversary at Freda's Café. From my first phone conversation with Steve. I was confident that we were in for a real treat. I was not disappointed. We had 22 guests. Upon our arrival we were warmly greeted and made feel comfortable immediately. Our main course options were amazing and every one was delicious, I had the crab cakes ad they were the best I have ever had. All our guests were raving about the food. We completed our meal with a superb dessert made in house by the pastry chef. The coffee was delicious (we are all coffee drinkers) Flossy the server went above and beyond and was on top of all the details. I highly recommend Freda's Café, a hidden gem right in the center of Cape May.

We have been trying to get a reservation for Freda's the last several times we have visited Cape May because of great reviews. Finally were able to align things and brought a group of 8 to dinner. Everyone agreed every meal was excellent, prepared perfectly, portioned perfectly. Great variety on the menu, everyone found something that jumped off the menu to them. Dessert was the same way, some of the best we have had on the Cape. The serving staff was outstanding too completing a fantastic meal. We have one open night for dinner during this trip and we are trying to get back into Freda's. A new favorite spot.

One of the finest, most delicious dinners I've ever had, anywhere. I had the 210 Ocean Street, two kinds of pasta with Lobster, Shrimp, Scallops, the biggest lump crab meat I've ever seen, in a light tomato cream sauce. Just spectacular! The tremendous amount of seafood in this dish was more than I ever would have expected and was cooked to perfection! My dinner companions had the Crab Cakes Marcus and the Duck which were superb! Deserts were the Bread Pudding and Apple Cobbler with vanilla ice cream. Again, just superb!

One of the best restaurants in Cape May. Highly recommend the crabcakes and rack of lamb!

Amazing food, options, and atmosphere. Courses paced almost perfect. Dinner was way too long and it wasn't busy. Also...a little smoozing and friendly convo goes a long way towards tips. They aren't deserved they are earned. Work girl

This was a fantastic meal in Cape May! Delicious, yummy what can I say? Definitely won’t regret this one.

Excellent dinning experience!!!The quaint location is central to Washington Street shopping and much more. The owners Carol & Steve were super sweet and Cheryl our waitress was very attentive! Every bit from the Brie, salad, seafood pasta and apple tart dessert were amazing. The love of good cuisine was clear in every detail.

Great night at Freda’s! Hadn’t been in quite a few years just because so many options in Cape May. Been wanting to go back & all 4 of us were thrilled with our meals & service..my personal favorite was the Caprese salad & Ahi tuna barely seared but
to perfection. Smallish menu but hard to decide due to so many deliciously described offerings. I highly recommend Freda’s!!

We’ve been here twice within the last year and both times the experience has been wonderful. We had the crab cakes and the pesto pasta with scallops and shrimp and both were absolutely delicious. We finished off with their famous praline dessert and it was phenomenal! The staff is a joy as well! 5 stars well-deserved. Thank you, Freda’s, we’ll be back for more!
